What's the thought of Zack Shannon coming to UNB next year? It's not like UNB to recruit from the MJHL and especially with the new roster cap in place. You just can't recruit for depth purposes, he must be an impact rookie, since there is a reduction in roster size (22 skaters). Shannon may also have a year left in Woodstock?
Zack would have more impact and a better chance to play, and flourish at St. Thomas, blasphomous as that is for his dad and the V-Red Prospects organization.Don't see him displacing any of the current crop. He could develop into a Todd type if the real Todd doesn't come back. But if you're Daine Todd...make the World University Team, treat it as a job audition...he'll make a lot of money playing D on the big ice over there.
The Varsity Reds Senior Recognition & Team Awards Night was held last night at Kingswood, compliments once again of Brian Johnston.
There were the customary parting, and touching, speeches by the graduating Seniors: some were short and sweet (Chad Denny & Matt Fillier), medium length (Bryce Swan, Ben Wright & Dion Campbell), and then the epic talk by Dan LaCosta who bared his soul about at his time at UNB before closing with his "Top 10 Moments". You had to be there. Colby Pridham and Travis Fullerton are both in the States, so their words were missed. Luke Lynes spoke last year, so didn't get to repeat (they called it the "Luke Lynes Rule" ...)
Awards wise, the presentations last night were:
Terry Shannon Memorial Unsung Hero: Matt Fillier
Pete Violette Best Defenceman: Marc-Antoine Desnoyers
Hardest Worker: Dan LaCosta
Most Improved: Split between Daine Todd & Nick MacNeil
Best Defensive Player: Ben Shutron & Ben Wright
Top Attitude: Ben Shutron
MVP for the season: Dan LaCosta
MVP for the playoffs: Dan LaCosta
Other team awards that have been previously announced, and included on the program (in case you missed them this year):
Mark Jeffrey Award: Chris Culligan
Mike Cavanagh Award: Marc-Antoine Desnoyers
Punchy Walker Award: Travis Fullerton, Ben Wright & Nick MacNeil
Don MacAdam Award: Ben Shutron
MVP Nationals: Tyler Carroll
Red & Black Award: Ben Shutron
Team Rookie of the Year: Cam Braes
Top Scorer, Season: Chris Culligan
Top Scorer, Playoffs: Cam Braes
Nick MacNeil wasn't there, as he is recovering from knee surgery.
When recruited, Matt Fillier only committed to the V-Reds after first making sure his girlfriend was admitted to the Nursing program at UNB.
Dan LaCosta admitted that after his so-so season last year he almost didn't come back this year, and it wasn't until the late summer that he decided to come back for sure. Good thing.
Chris Culligan, Ben Shutron, Daine Todd, Stefan Salituro & Josh Kidd are listed as "Future Grads". They're all completing their first degree this spring and applying for grad school or second degree next season. So they're bubble guys. That's a lot of talent that may or may not be playing for UNB next season.

It sounds like Wright is moving on, unless he goes after his masters?
