Boston is in need of a 3rd line LW, preferably one that will be a UFA after the season. Ideally, Boston would want a player that pots around 20 goals (in an 82-game season).

Vinny Prospal would be a good fit, with 6 goals (as of this post). He is 38, a free agent at the end of the year, and would be a great rental for this season. With the amount of forward prospects in the Bruins system (Khokhlachev, Spooner, Griffith, Caron, and Sauve), the Bruins can allow Prospal to walk, and have a prospect compete for a 3rd line spot.

What would it take to get Prospal? What about:

LW Vinny Prospal

Bruins 2013 3rd Round Pick
Maxim Chudinov

With Chudinov unlikely to go overseas to play in the NHL, he would be thrown in risk-free for the Bruins. However, if Kekäläinen can convince Chudinov to play, it would be a great acquisition for the Blue Jackets.

How is the value?

Value is lousy - why include Chudinov at all if he isn't likely to come over.

You are giving the Jackets a 3rd rounder for what will likely be the most attactive wing available at the deadline. Columbus will get better offers at the deadline.

Not sure if Vinny is going to be available at the deadline.

He has been signed to a one year contract with the published understanding it would be renewed annually until such time as he wanted to retire, at which time he would have an undefined position with the organization.

However that gentlemen's agreement was made by the previous GM, and that begs the question does the new management team honor that agreement? My guess is that they do, but that is pure speculation.

If Prospal was to be rented out(which I doubt, reasons stated above), he could get better than a late 3rd pick. Mid-late 2nd would be more like it.

I'd do a 2nd straight up for Prospal.

Chudinov is a good Dman, but as you said he's very unlikely to come over to NA...

I'd do this deal no question but I'm sure Columbus could get more. Very interested in Prospal, though.

I guess it all depends on if JD is going to honor the promise made to Prospal that he would join the front office after retiring.

That and I rather imagine we'd want more than a 3rd round draft pick and another Mozyakin scenario.

Thanks, Howson, for cleaning up MacLean's toxic waste. Welcome, Kekalainen; let's get good things built!

Where are you guys getting that he is unlikely to come over here? I read Chiarelli say he was going to let him play over there for at least two years and see how his development goes. Has something changed? Is this overreaction like when Koko went to play in the KHL?

I really haven't heard he has a problem coming over and I thought I read he wanted to play in the NHL.

I don't really want to see the Bruins give up much of anything for Prospal, I would rather see Caron up in Boston, I think his skill translates to the NHL much better than Bourque's does.

Vinny would likely be a very good fit in Boston. As mentioned Vinny was extended an evergreen contract (1 year rolling contract until retirement, then a place in the organization) by Scott Howson. He does have a NTC so he would need to agree and by all accounts loves Columbus. He's great for Columbus, however, if he were to be moved it would most likely be for yound forwards, not defensive prospects. Columbus has Murray, Moore, Goloubef, Savard, Erixon, Mike Reilly, etc. Up front we are devoid of depth and talent.

Think 2nd or a forward prospect and a lower pick.
