I agreed that Edmonton wouldn't do this. I was simply explaining why Toronto fans might want to trade a great defenseman in Gunnarsson.
I agree with 1 poster saying with Toronto's D prospects and what they currently have on the team Gunnarson is the most expendable and easiest to replace from within. With this being seen as a very deep draft and not nearly as sharp a drop in talent as there has been the last couple years it might make sense to pick up some extra 1st round picks if it doesn't harm your team in the long run.
No chance Gunnar is worth a first, never mind in the deepest draft in years, let alone one that is almost guaranteed to be top 10, maybe higher.
Thanks for the laugh OP.
Every year is the deepest draft in years on HF boards. Until the lottery and then everyone tries to devalue the picks because they want to fantazize about acquiring them. EVERY YEAR!

To be fair some drafts are better than others. For example 2008 was a deep draft...something like 17 of the 1st round already in the NHL and probably another 5-8 that are developing and can still make contributions. Very few misses and even those that were had a lot of potential like Beach and Filatov.
Nobody's giving up a first for Gunnarsson. He's solid and steady, but will never put a defense over the top.. Good stay at home partner for players like Phaneuf, but we've seen the price for these type of players to be a 2nd.
So that is one trade that every Leaf fan refers to. Now there are so many factors at play here:
-quality of the draft
-Nsh needing to make a run based on Suter being UFA and Weber being RFA etc
-quality of playoff field etc
Just because it happened last year doesn't mean it will happen this year. Go look at all the trades that have happened so far this yr. Legit NHL players are going for 3rd, 5th rd picks. So based on recent events I would say his value is a lot lower than a 1st rd pick. I can't wait to revisit these threads after the deadline and see people's reactions to what these players values really were. History tells me when deep drafts like 2003 or 2008 come around, top picks are not moved very much (especially at the deadline). This draft is lauded for its quality so I see the same thing happening....
no gm is giving up their first round pick this year. Love or hate Howson, but he read these tea leaves and has 3 picks in the first round this year. Blue Jackets are going to cash in huge .
Especiall since the bottom pair has been our best pair.
Maybe one of Bieksa and Garrison. But once they get on there game I don't think he would play over either.
So for your bottom-pairing, you entitle them to a spot because of what they have done for 15 games, despite how terrible they have been in the past.
For your 2nd pairing, you entitle them to a spot because of what they have done in the past, despite how they are playing now.
For Gunnarsson, you ignore everything and say he doesnt have a spot, even though he has played better than some of your defensemen in the past, and has played better than some of them this season (while being injured no less).

Mmk.
They were also easily our best pair in last years playoffs, and were great down the stretch. The idea that Ballard is crap is gone for anyone who pays attentions. He had one bad year and has been solid and reliable ever since, and Tanev always has been.
I would give him a shot in favor of Bieksa or maybe Garrison right now (Although they both were fine tonight) but when all our defensemen are playing the way they are capable of, he isn't needed and doesnt fit.
