I disagree. Both were bad picks. I feel Bourdon was picking for position. Virtanen was picking poorly. Virtanen at his best was a top 6 forward, Bourdon was at worst a top four dman.

Yes they were both bad picks no one disagrees with that.

Bourdon over Kopitar costed the team at least 1 cup which makes it worse.

Missing on Kopitar because he was from a "non-traditional" hockey country is probably the dumbest single thing this organization has done in my time as a hockey fan.

There's kind of a lovable brain dead quality to Jim Benning. I mean it's like... he's a ****ing idiot, a complete ****ing idiot. But he's trying. It's like if you put a five year old in charge of an airport's air traffic control. I expect a complete disaster but I don't think the kid was being malicious about it.

Missing on Kopitar who everyone and their mother knew was a top five talent in the draft because of where his mom pooped him out was just the height of idiocy. It's too bad the archives from that time are gone. The prison riot was epic.

Agree passing on was a major blunder and the reasons purported are ridiculous. The thing is several teams made the same mistake, as after CBJ took Brule at 6 Kopitar was the obvious BPA for Chicago, SJ, and Ottawa as well as us. Maybe it speaks to the mentality in the NHL in 2005, but it's odd that so many teams made the same mistake presumably for the same bad reasoning.

In the case of Virtanen and passing on Ehlers and Nylander, we were really the first team to "reach" in the draft, with every team before us drafting a player from the consensus top 5 in the draft.

Especially when he was playing in the SEL at the time

Thinking about the 2005 draft year, at that time we did not need a center. We had Brendan Morrison (whom we've signed for a 3 year contract), Henrik and Kesler down the pipe.

So back then, Nonis went with Bourdon.

Agreed with this.

Passing on Kopitar was a far worse decision. He was the clear top available player, and though Bourdon was the next best guy in my opinion there was a large drop between the two.

Picking Virtanen may have been the wrong choice, but he was in a similar tier as Ehlers, Nylander, and Ritchie send there was no consensus pick. Passing on Kopitar for Bourdon would have been similar to if Sam Bennett dropped and we picked Virtanen over him.

In hindsight that makes sense but Henrik was a middle 6 C and Kesler was seen as a bottom 6 C. You can never have enough good centers

The thing about Kopitar being from a non-hockey country was probably the main reason for him sliding. He was rated a top 5 talent with no glaring issues (even against good competition in Sweden).

I still think it was a screw up by the scouting department - hell even OTT took Brian Lee over Kopitar. Nonis probably did have Bourdon rated higher.

Then to make up the Kopitar miss, we drafted entitled daddy's boy Cody Hodgson whom this board was salivating over cause he was our 'future captain'...me included.

Aye, what a massive colossal miss that was (to be fair, some of it was on his own faults, injuries, refused to work on his defensive game, etc)
