.. hes had a great season, i can only prey he ends up like a karlsson.
it makes me mad to hear people wanna trade him.. cause its this kind of trade where we look back at in 5 years and it makes a video on youtube called ' worst trades in leafs history'
If there was a rookie trophy for Defence it would be him or Faulk.
Faulk likely gets the nod for three reasons:
1. Age matters. Faulk is 2 years younger, WJC eligible
2. Faulk led the Canes in ice time this year
3. He also made a veteran in Kaberle expendable
Yes, he has beat out Faulk, Voynov, Larrson, and Cowen. It is very impressive the fact his production was limited to the 2nd half of the season.
Although I find college players have a little bit of an asterisk the fact they had extra years of development. Kind of like the Mike Johnson phenomena, where we all felt that he didn't deserve the calder nomination even though he was up there in rookie scoring.
Wouldn't it be Karlsson(sp?) for the Ottawa Senseless? Is he not is his rookie year this year or am I mistaken?
Very mistaken, I believe he's in his 3rd NHL season. Definitely not a rookie.
Anyways this thread is a shining moment for this club. NHL playoffs are as exciting as ever and we are making up awards that our players could win!?! Hahaha
Gardiner showed poise and great wheels all season long. It was really exciting to see him find another offensive gear later in the season, even if everything else seemed to be caving in around the team.
I believe he has the potential to put up more than 50 points in a season. Glad he's one of ours.

Both had excellent seasons though
I liked Faulks consistency better, but TBH, Gardiner had his ups and downs esp defensively.
But having said that, Gardiners "ups" defensively certainly showed just how smart he is, and that with some added size he should EASILY be able to hold down a top 3 spot moving forward.
In other words, I liked Gardiners peaks on defence better than I did Faulks.

As a Canes fan, don't put too much stock in Faulk's "consistency". He had his share of blunders, rookie mistakes, and off nights as well. Honestly, inconsistency is to be expected of a young defensemen like Faulk and Gardiner. (Faulk was 19 for most of the season and Gardiner was 21).
I guess what I'm saying as a guy who watched a lot of Faulk, I don't think he was as consistent as you are making him out to be, but it's not totally unexpected. Both he and Gardiner (from the times I saw him) look to have a lot of the same qualities (such as poise and calm under pressure) and look to have a promising future.
I also wouldn't be surprised if both Faulk and Gardiner have more ups and downs in their second seasons. There are a number of guys who had great 1st seasons then ups and downs (Schenn, Myers, Subban etc..). All part of the growth and learning process for young defensemen.

Yeah, i wouldnt be surprised either, happens alot.
Yeah I know Faulk isnt perfect, I just didnt think his mistakes were as bad as Jakes if that makes sense. There were quite a few times this season where you would go "uh-oh jake" and it would be pretty bad.
I saw less of that with Faulk, but again 12 games or so is not quite enough to be making a sure fire statement on my part.
I wanted to see how Gardiner's rookie season compared to the debut seasons of other high-scoring defenceman in the league. I started with the Top 20 scoring D (as of near the end of the season), though dropped Campbell because his rookie seasons was pre-lockout and Chara, as I didn't think it was a fair comparison.
