Anyone have any advice tips on car rentals? I'm probably going to a conference in Santa Barbara in June, and what I want to do is fly to LAX, rent a car, go to the conference, then drive up California (hitting some breweries on the way) to Oregon, do some stuff there, then drop off the car at PDX and fly back. Is there a good way to find cheap prices or can you not do much better than the quoted stuff on Expedia etc.?

Picky about the kind of car you rent? I haven't rented a car myself in a while, but recently found one for my friends traveling to Scottsdale for $11/day.

It's definitely worth the extra 10-15 minutes to look at each car rental company individually; never trust the clearing-house websites to have the best deals (but check them out too). I'm planning a trip to California myself, and Enterprise has the best rates that I've seen.

Also, call your insurance provider and credit card company to see what kind of insurance you already have, as opposed to signing that stupid loss damage waiver.

Not really, cheaper the better. Where did you find $11/day?

Thanks I'll definitely look into that.

Found theirs at Hotwire. Not sure how I ended up on their site, as I don't think I have ever used it, but their car rentals are pretty good. Under $8/day in certain cities...
