It's definitely worth the extra 10-15 minutes to look at each car rental company individually; never trust the clearing-house websites to have the best deals (but check them out too). I'm planning a trip to California myself, and Enterprise has the best rates that I've seen.
Also, call your insurance provider and credit card company to see what kind of insurance you already have, as opposed to signing that stupid loss damage waiver.
