Sounds like her statement wasn't directed at the "mainstream heterosexual public" or whatever you want to call it, she was directing her comments towards the LGBT community and especially young gay and lesbian people who are looking for role models. It baffles me why so many people get angry like she's just looking for attention or a pat on the back and wail about how awful it is that someone's talking about it. Guess what? It's not always about you.
I never once said that she was doing it for publicity. I said that the media is going to blow it up that way because of the fact that it was done in front of people on a microphone.
My personal belief is that these types of things are unnecessary. If people had a "straight human rights conference" it would get looked upon negatively.
Maybe I only have that opinion because I see no difference in gay or straight people. I guess maybe it's necessary because a lot of people do have a problem with it. I don't know. Touchy subject.
Anyway, her sexuality has never mattered to me. I love watching her act and can't wait for her next project (after X-Men cause it looks like crap).
I respect your opinion, and also hope that one day this kind of thing isn't necessary. But in today's world, it is still necessary. The reason why the gay community holds these types of conferences is because they are still looked upon as unequal by many people in the world, thus in need of being under the Human Rights banner. All the crap that preceded the Olympics is proof of that. These kinds of things are big reasons why so many gay people may be afraid to come out and live their lives the way they want to. I'm not trying to say Ellen Page is some kind of hero, just that a person of her stature, that more introverted people can relate to, may help more people face their fears and start living their lives in safety and comfort, which will hopefully ultimately lead to that kind of society we're striving for.
And to BonMorrison, I think it's good you've started this thread. If it was a topic not worth talking about, then this thread would be off the first page by now.
