OHT35 - Ode to the Dearly Departed - Part 2b

The OHT tribute to the dearly departed continues with a look at the bottom 6 ranked teams to have lost in the quarter-final rounds. None of these were really expected to get any further than this. Anyhow, here's the chart:

The Banjo-Cats were the consensus pick to finish 8th in the CW. So when they claims 6th place and were much closer to 5th than 7th they have to be considered the surprise team of the season. They managed to get points against every opponent. Frankly, that surprises me. They looked like a very weak team when I saw them in exhibition games, regular season games, and playoff games. Yet week after week they were somehow picking up points. A split with UBC, a sweep of Lethbridge, a split with Calgary, and a three-pointer against Sask started the season. So, good for the Kittens.

The Sir Wilfrids were at one time one of those teams that always seemed a threat to get to the U-Cup. Then they hit the skids. In fact, at the Christmas break they were a C team. But a 9-3-0 record in the new year allowed them to escape C level. They were edged in a very tight series by Guelph and were right in the mix in what was a very competitive OUA West. Just look at the list of scores and you can see how tight almost every game was.

The Blahs had the weakest schedule in the CIS with 16 games against C teams. They did, however, manage to have a good series against Ottawa where they were eliminated with two OTLs. This team could benefit from a tougher schedule next year. To their credit, they did have non-conference games against Acadia and SMU.

UOIT edged out Brock for the final playoff spot, which is their accomplishment for the season. Even though they lost the big head-to-head game with Brock down the stretch, they did close with 4 wins in 5 games. They usually manage a major surprise or two each year, but that did not materialize.

The Queens were another major beneficiary of a cushy schedule, 1ith 15 games against C teams. They also went 2-0-7 in OT. That's a lot of overtime games. I thought this was a team on the rise. This season was a disappointment. Last year so many OUA East teams were just like Queen's, apparently on the rise. Hard to figure why so many collapsed in just one year.

The new digs at the Old Maple Leaf Gardens didn't help the Rams on-ice product this season. On the positive side they had late wins over UQTR and Carleton to nail down a playoff berth. But overall this was a floundering team. They gave up 108 goals in regular season games.

Unlike the other CanadaWest teams,(Manitoba included) and the AUS, teams like UBC, U of T, Ottawa, Western and McGill all have higher admission standards thus the difficulty in recruiting players whose life focus to date has been hockey. Most players coming out of the CHL just don't have the grades to get into the top academic schools. Certainly there are other reasons like tuition fees and geography that have to be considered but teams can only recruit players who will be admitted.
I don't know if UBC has across-the-board higher admission requirements. But UBC has oodles of players in their own backyard. They have a whole division in the WHL, another division in adjacent US states, and the BCJHL is one of the best Junior A leagues in Canada, with teams in bigger cities that recruit players from out of province.

IMO the bigger factors are: 1 - a historically weaker program; and 2 - the NCAA rumours scared away some potential recruits.

As a UBC alumni I can verify that their admission requirements across the board are higher than any school west of UofT and east of McGill. Having a stable full of WHL players in your back yard isn't of much benefit if they can't get into the school. A few of those players are playing at SFU, but a lot are in Alberta schools. Now if the CIS had an oriental division UBC would take it in a cake walk.
