It's pretty good... but the college hockey isn't known to produce an abundance of NHL talent, so we're going to have to cross our fingers on these guys

I'm surprised Leblanc is choosing this road, considering he's from here, usually natives will go to the Q or the O

I noticed it too that this is only one league of many... Too bad it wasn't 3 out of 8 overall...

But at least it looks a little promising...

what???? college hockey is producing a lot of nhl talent last 6-7 years WAY MORE than the Q....i mean just where kristo/cicy are playing you have guy like Oshie/Parise/zajac have come out of this program.

Can I ask a question? why was Leblanc drafted so high with 59 pts in 60 games in the USHL and cichy so low with 45 points in 30 games? Obv points aren't everything and thats all fine and well but its something that I've questioned since we drafted them, as well cichy has 3 pts in 4 games with UND and kristo 4 pts 4 games with UND both are off to pretty good starts

Cichy was one year overaged, that doesn't mean too too much but it has something to do with it.

Even still though 45 points in 59 games, it doesnt seem like to big a jump, and my god the points in the season just passed seem unreal in comparison for him

Well that's not entirely accurate. Alot of guys who come from a Midget program like Leblanc's (WI Lions) will normally opt to go the prep school route which eventually leads to American College hockey. Most guys aren't on the same talent level as Louis, so the route usually goes Prep to DIV3, but in his case he was good enough for the USHL and a top flight US education.

If you can speak english well enough and have decent grades (and alot of Midget programs are now turning into Sport-etudes) then going the college route is a pretty safe and desirable option for kids who aren't putting all their eggs into a pro career basket. Out here in BC, there's as much top end talent playing in the BCHL (Junior A) as there is in the DUB simply because its a great jumping off point to American college hockey. Quebec lags behind because of the language issue, but in Leblanc's case he's coming from an anglo program (relative compared to others in Qc I guess).

...as for the list, its also important to remember that alot of the Habs' top end draft picks come out of the College and USHL ranks, so there's bound to be a disproportionate number of our picks playing college hockey. That will tend to inflate our numbers on lists such as these.

I'm pretty excited about all 3 players though.

Ya, over a 10 year span that's quite pathetic relative to the CHL, Sweden, Finland and Russia.

I'm a huge Finland-homer, so trust me that we'd kill innocent babies to have that kind of talent come out of our system in the last ten years.

Should Hockey Québec eliminate college hockey (Junior AAA, college league) and merge it with the QMJHL?

Leblanc made a name for himself in Midget and carried that over to the USHL where he was rookie of the year.

Cichy was passed over in '08, likely a combo of lack of height, concerns about skating/strength/defensive play, and perhaps he was under scouted while on a crappy team. His skating seems fine to me and he does backcheck hard so while he does look short out there, he's got a compact frame, so I would lean towards him being underscouted while he was on a bad Tri City team, as he didn't get traded to a top team until later in the season of his 2nd year.

Either way a nice find by Timmins and his staff, from the early looks of things.

If the season turns out the way, 3/4's of this board thinks it will, we might just have it in 2 years !
