Can't believe we are even having an argument over whether or not Tavares is elite. Trying to say he is not elite because he has not accomplished any awards is just dumb. He puts up great numbers on a bad team. That's impressive. He doesn't have much to work with and he still plays like a boss. Anyone who puts up 75-80+ points should be considered to have the right to be called elite. If that player does it on a crap team like the isles, there is no question the player is elite. That's like saying kovalchuk on the thrashers wasn't elite because he never got far into the playoffs. Just an outrageous argument.
....i can't believe we are arguing whether or not the last 8 games matter when trying to evaluate a player. What if a waiver pickup like Wade Redden after 8 games had 10 goals? Sure, it would be a hot streak, but should that not be taken into account when considering his status as a legitimate player on the team because he sucked last season? Regardless of my opinion in this thread, that is a ridiculous mentality.
Obvioulsy im not arguing that its the be all end all, but to say it is not relevant and shouldn't be looked out is probably more telling that those stats don't favor the player you are trying to argue for
2 years is huge especially at 23 at the same age Giroux had 47 points in 82 games.
Players develop at different speeds. Crosby/Ovie came right out at near their top level and continued it. Giroux stepped it up every year for a few years. You can't predict continued success based on development.
