Stupid question - how to put shinpads on outside of tongues?

why do you guys put shins on first? it makes more sense to me to do jock, pull socks up to knees, pants, skates, shins, socks over shins

I go jock, socks, pants, skates, shinguards. Then I pull my socks down over the shinguards (which are over the skates). It doesn't really stretch the socks at all in my case.

Maybe it's just me but my socks are too tight and my shin pads are too long for this to be a viable method.

Also, given the dozen or so different methods - everything from pulling the socks up over the knees to yanking em over the skates - its enough of an issue that there are tons of creative solutions.

I wear Grafs that have thick and long tongues so it doesn't really work. That and I like my shin pads tight and secure.

I got, comp shorts, shins, socks, hockey shorts, then skates. Once i tied my laces i just tuck the tongue under the shin pad by lifting the pad forward.

Okay. The way I do it is simple and I've been doing it for years.

1. Compression/Cup
2. Shin Pads
3. Socks
4. Hockey Pants

Once this is done I roll the socks up to the middle of my shins, unstrap the bottom of my shin pads and put my skates on. Lift up the shinpads and put the tongue under.

It's not like I have to squeeze the tongue under or pry the shin pad up to fit the tongue under. Once my shins, socks and pants are on, I just roll the socks up under the knee and unstrap the bottom stap on my shins and I can easily move the shinpads out of the way to lay the tongue flat against my shin and than put the shinpad back over it.

Right now I do this ^

Because I have One80 shins that can be simply secured with two Velcro straps I put them on last. And like the OP, I use regular hockey socks where the bottom is more tighter, so I slide the socks down to my ankles.

Before I had CCM shins where the straps were looping through the side of the shins and then I would be able to secure them on. This made it more a pain in the ass and hence the CCM shins was something I had to put on first to avoid having to fight and loop through the side. Anyways, back when I first started I purchased shins that were too short for me so I had to upgrade - this after taking a puck between the tongue and bottom of the shin guards.

I go...

- Jock and garter
- Socks
- pants
- skates

Then, I bundle the sock down around my ankles. As low as they can go around my boot.

- strap on the shins
- pull socks up and attach to garter. Pull the rear of the sock from behind the Achilles guard.
- tape and go.

My socks are tight at the bottom as well and this works perfectly.

I've always done jock/compression shorts first, then put my socks on, just pull them on about halfway up your shins, my skates go on next, pull/scrunch the socks down over the top of my skates, shin pads on (always over top of my tongues), pull socks up over them and attach to jock shorts, then my pants go on last. It's too easy. (I have zippers on the inside of my pants so it's easy to fit them over skates, if you don't have this then it might be difficult to pull on your pants after your skates are on).

Just started playing again after many years off, I never would of thought to do this, or probably noticed if people did it, now find myself checking tongues on TV, seems some still keep them out, is there a reason besides aesthetics to do this?

haha. never really considered that this would be a complicated thing to accomplish for some people. but anyway...

i do the jock->shingaurds->socks->pants, then put on the skates, slide each shingaurd up a bit while i tie that skate, then slide it back down when the skate is tied. then i give it a real good tape around the sock, especially right below the knee to snug things up a bit as needed. good to go.

i've tried the shingaurds last method a few times 'cause it makes sense, but i find it a lot more cumbersome trying to fiddle with getting the shins placed comfortable and snugged up right, but not too tight, when i have skates and pants and all that stuff getting in the way. lol. either way works though.

aesthetics are a big part of it to be honest, but it's also a comfort thing. when i spend all that time finding perfect fitting comfortable skates, i don't want to go jamming a hunk of shinpad in there really. i think it's especially noticeable if you wear longer shingaurds like i do with a good bit of overlap. they'd stick quite a ways into the tongue if i put them under, and it would bug the crap out of me. lol. it also feels more protective to me, in the way that it overlaps. but that could just be my imagination.

Thanks, I guess it is an extra layer of protection, I'll probably just keep tongues out, as is, my shins fit really well against the skate and barely need any tape, I actually tape them more for piece of mind, than actually needing them tighter

Usually I put on jock, socks, pants, skates then shins and pull my docks over the shins. When I don't have much time I do like: socks, skates, shins, pull over socks then pants. Just to get my fit perfect.

When I had Bauer skates and shins, I wore tongues out because it was easier to put everything on and didn't make a difference. Bauer skates have shorter tongues and the shins were pretty slim.

Two years ago I got Graf skates which have longer and thicker tongues and Reebok shins which are much wider. I can't do tongues out because they just don't fit. So I have to put shins over tongues.

It doesn't feel any different on the ice and honestly I prefer the look of tongues out, but what can you do.

I do the same set up as Eliasfan.... jock, socks, skates, push socks down onto skates, shin pads, pull socks up, pull pants on after. I've done this for years though.

Before this I'd also go jock, socks, shin pads, pulls socks up, put skates on, then pull on pants. Personally find the first way the easiest to get it all done

- Under armour leggings
- Jock
- Shins
- Socks
- Pants
- Skates

and then i just pull my shin pads over my tongues. It works perfect for me and I've never even though about doing it another way.

I don't see why people put the shin pad over the tongue. Seems like it would restrict your ability to bend your ankle. I always just had the shinpad under the tongue, then put the sock over the tongue but not over the back. Looks best imo.

Example of how I had mine:

Example of how I had mine:

In juniors I took a puck in that 2" space below the pad in your pick, had to lay down & keep my foot elevated for a week+.

Now I use a tight fitting, longer pad that extends all the way down to the top of my foot. Add that to the fact that I like skates with a high boot & it's basically impossible to stick the tongue out or put the shin pad on then lift it up (more than 4" inches up or so with tightly strapped pads) to put skates on.

Yep. My last pair of shins I brought my skates to the store so I could make sure they went down to the top of the skates. They are Reeboks so they have a wider opening at the bottom to wear the shins inside without hampering movement. I still need to tape them down tight and wish there was better knee padding. Might have to get a new pair one of these days.
