That's not true. I'd acknowledge a great contract when I see one. I think Voracek contract is great, while Simmonds is meh.
Umm no. The Kings lose a minute munching shutdown center and replace him with a crash and bang scorer and a rookie centerman. Richards >>>> Schenn and Simmonds for that playoff run.
Especially considering Simmonds was a King in a system that was all about defence and didn't do much. When he got to Philly in a system that is all about offense that changed. He doesn't do well when defense is more important than offense. He also vanished in the second round of the playoffs.

Simmonds was playing with a broken left index finger that required surgery after the playoffs.

To be fair, everyone disappeared except probably Giroux and Bryz.
Right, yet when Carter got injured in the playoffs, Flyer fans rip him to shreds for it. The double standard is a thing of beauty!
This.
Carter was a goat, but he wasn't the problem. Proved it with his clutch scoring in the Finals. The problem with Philly will always be goaltending. True story.

/the system we are playing or at the very least the players execution of the d system in place.
Personnel is not the Flyers main problem so adding a d-man other then a true number one won't do much IMO. For that matter i really don't think the best goalie in the world could do good on this team.
As an Oiler fan I am pretty much use to being told that the Oilers cannot afford their big 4 and still surround them with solid talent. As such I am going to ask this more for information than to try and rag on Flyer fans.
In isolation for what he did last year the deal seems fine. Personally I'd be concerned about giving him $4M untill he comes close to duplicating his numbers from last year. And I am aware of his intangibles so I know that he brings more to the table than goals and points. But it does look to me that he is destined to be a third line RW playing behind Briere and Voracek. (AM I wrong on this?) Given that the Flyers will have to anti up for A lot of very good young players in a couple of years, while trying to fill out their defense is this not a big risk, especially if the cap goes down.
In particular, how does this deal impact resigning Hartnell next year?
This is the biggest problem I have with the contract, you are assuming that he will continue to improve every year like this and then hand out a 6 year contract. What if he regresses, what if his defense doesn't improve, would you be ok with a 15 goal 40 point guy for 6 years at that salary. A shorter 2-3 year term makes way more sense, it is just taking way to much risk for the player.
That is the chance you take. Philly is loving having Giroux for the next 2 years at 3.75 mill!!!!! And no...Simmonds won't be G. Just using it as an example.

They're already talking to him about an extension as well.
You would think the Flyers won the cup the way their fans in this thread talk. Was a first round victory over the Penguins that important to their personal security?
But they did win a Cup, only in the form of their former players and former team personnel wearing a different uniform.

I'm a few days late on this, but Flyers fans defended Carter to the death for his playoff performances. A few obviously criticized him and called him invisible, but most acknowledged that he was plagued by late season injuries and stuck up for him the whole way.
I think you're falling into the HFboards logical fallacy of 'a couple fans representing the entire fan base'.
I also agree that you gotta let it go with Carter and Richards. Time to move on...
