Komisarek had one really good year (2007-08). One. It was a fluke season.
He already wasn't playing well before the Lucic fight that supposedly broke him. Markov still made him look better than he really was, but even he wasn't enough to make Komisarek look good that year.
yeah a lot of Montreal fans were mad to learn that Gainey even gave him a big contract offer (4 million rumoured) to retain him. He really was terrible that 2008-2009 season even with Markov and accounting for Lucic fights. Burke certainly did Montreal management a big favour by outbidding them.
Maybe you could draw a comparison to someone like Phaneuf...maybe they peaked too soon and had the "sky's the limit" label wrongfully slapped on them. It happens.
No coincidence both guys started their careers on Canadian teams, where it doesn't take much for the hype train to build up steam in a hurry.
Phaneuf in Toronto is a lot better than Phaneuf in Calgary...he's become a much more reliable D and puts up 45-50 points.

That's good for me.
Wasn't trying to take a shot at him, but I think the general opinion of Phaneuf will be that he never really lived up to the tremendous hype surrounding him in his first couple of years with Calgary. He certainly hasn't fallen off as far as Komisarek, mind you.
He got totally miscast, plain and simple. As a 1.5-2 mil guy he's very valuable veteran in a third pairing role. Started off the year very solid with relatively few mental errors but younger players on better contracts outplayed him.
The fact that he is injury prone doesn't make his case to play any better because if the Leafs want to buy him out or trade (lol) him, they can't risk that.
Just speculation but his season came to a halt only 4 games in after an eye injury which allegedly came about in practice after slamming a stick in frustration. Doesn't sound like Carlyle liked his reaction.

How many Norris nominations does he have in Toronto again? He might be better than he was at the end of his run in Calgary, but he isn't the player he was before his leg injuries.

That's great, but he doesn't put up those point totals. His best is 44 and in the rest of his time as a Leaf he's well below that pace. Offensively, his numbers were better every year in Calgary than his best year in TO, except one. His defensive pairing also performed better in Calgary as well, plus he was alot more aggressive as indicated by much higher PM totals on average.
He's playing better than his last year in Calgary, but he's nowhere near the player who played in Calgary his first 4 seasons. Defensively, Offensivly or Physically.
But seriously it seems he thinks too much about how does he look on the ice, whenever he'd get hit, beaten or made a bad play he was completly lost on the ice, his demeanor completly changed, he thought too highly of himself, got badly injured in his first fight with Lucic and when he came back he never got to play on the same level. Like he wasn't built to play a rugged gritty game, gets him off.
People denying that Lucic is the reason of his demise did not watch Habs games that season. Komisarek was an absolute beast. Him and Lucic chirped multiple times and there was a huge buildup before their confrontation. That particular night they finally dropped them and Lucic DESTROYED Komisarek. Everyone watching must've been in awe, I know I was.
The unstoppable Komisarek. The beast. Destroyed as if he was nothing. At that very moment you just knew this was the end of Komisarek. He lost the edge that made him successful.
Yes Markov made him better. But Komisarek at that time also made Markov better. His physical force complemented him very well, the same way Emelin's edge is complementing Markov now. But after that night it was over.
Totally agree with you. He was never the same after that fight.
Markov and Komi complimented each other beautifully. He definitely made Markov better. He was the stay at home tough guy and let Markov do the wheeling.
Once he got pounded he was never the same... didn't matter if he was playing with Markov or not. He just wasn't the same player ever again. His last year in Montreal WITH Markov he sucked.
And I was actually really pissed when the Leafs signed him because I was sure he was going to bounce back. Unfortunately he never did.
