So let me get this....he is a consistant producer on a fairly bad team and that decreases his value? So what now, we lend him to the Kings....see if he scores there....and then you might be interested?
He is fine as a second pairing guy. Very useful on the top PK unit too, he was a big reason the Devils broke the modern PK% record last season.
Even with his contract, I don't see it being a problem especially with both Connolly and Lombardi being off the books AND Komisarek being on his last year and a minimized cap hit next year. I'd love to do something around MacArthur and Volchenkov. I think playing him with Gardiner would be great.
Don't get me wrong, Volchenkov is an awesome stay at home dman however its easy when the doctors are forcing you to stay home. I would love for the Leafs to acquire Clarkson but that will never happen.

Clever pun....
Volchenkov is a defensive specialist nothing more. Unless Kovalchuk is setting him up with wide open nets, he's not scoring. He's best used in a third pairing role playing limited even strength minutes but used heavily on the penalty kill and in key defensive situations. For what he brings, he is a bit pricey but he also brings a very rare game that not many people can emulate.
In an uptempo even-strength system, you can see he is lacking and you will see the Devils play guys like Tallinder, Harrold, Greene, etc more even strength because they fit their system.
I highly doubt Clarkson leaves, but if he does, he is probably going to TO. Burke would love him and he'd love to go there, but he is a pretty loyal guy so he'd likely stay in NJ unless we totally screw him over or Lou seriously lowballs him. I doubt Lou would do either to him though.
I never liked Volchenkov in Jersey. Not horrible, but not good enough to justify the contract, especially with a NTC. I'm thinking that contract could be trouble in a few years if the Devils are near the cap ceiling.

It may be in year six, but for now, it may be pricey but it's not a problem. Even then, for how rare of a game he brings, the shot-blocking, the physicality, it's pretty valuable especially in defensive situations and penalty kill. It's not a coincidence that he played 3:05 minutes of PK time per game (most on Devils) and was a part of a record setting PK.
For that reason, it may be like 500k too high, but it's a pretty good deal.

Hopefully he wasn't 100 percent in the playoffs, because he was brutal in the first round. He got coned every game by the Panthers. He improved later in the playoffs, but I remember some stuff that was covered up like causing a breakaway in game 5 of the SCF. If Marty don't stop that I'm sure that wouldn't have gone unnoticed.
Merrill won't be moved. I would be shocked. The Devils also cannot move a first because of the looming Kovalchuk penalty.
He might be a fit like Poni was, but the Leafs fans aren't going to like the price we got Poni for.
He speaks in glowing terms about Lou and DeBoer, and both of them praise him right back. When there were nonsense rumours that he had demanded a trade (invented by Nick Kypreos), Clarkson not only refuted them point blank, he went further and said unprovoked that he wants to be a lifetime Devil.
The Devils are not interested in trading Fayne.
I am not expecting it Saugus, we both know he is something and the devils and anyone would be high on him. However for the first rounder I know it's not happening due to the draft being in NJ next year. Hence I was thinking something else.
Clarkson would be definitely someone I think Burke would be after but I can't see Lou or Deboer letting him go.

With the Devils' current ownership difficulties, I don't they are likely to be near the cap ceiling in the next few years.
Stefan Matteau + Mike Hoeffel for Clarke MacArthur + Cody Franson.
Devils won't be trading Matteau. They must have been extremely high on him to keep their #29 pick when they have to forfeit that 1st rounder or the following year's 1st. They aren't going to get the 30th this year.Plus they knew how strong the 2013 draft class was.

Very high on him. Kid has done very well in the QMJHL, and this pick looks better and better after every game
