Not that I dislike Kostka, but the Leafs defense has become quite a jungle back there, and with Gunnarson and Gardiner likely back in the lineup soon, there's really no place for this guy. It would be a disservice to Kostka to demote him since he's done nothing but good things. Good guy, good player, deserves a chance with another NHL team.
I'm interested to see which teams would like him for 6/7th round pick to be their #6/#7.

He's been a great find for us and will be a cheap top 4 D-man for the foreseeable future. Why would we want to move him?

Why? There's zero reason to move him when he has been serviceable and especially for a 6/7th round pick.

You would honestly play Kostka over Gunnarson and Gardiner? That's silly.
Holzer isn't going down, Fraser has been better, Komisarek is immovable. So there's three.
Then we have Phaneuf, Liles, Franson, Gunnarson, and Gardiner. Can't keep 'em all.
So trading for the sake of trading? Fraser has been better how? They've all been good but moving Kostka for a nothing pick while he's averaging over 24 minutes a game and looking decent while doing so, isn't exactly the best asset management.
I think the Leafs are more interested in trading Liles' long-term contract than a present/future minute eater who they can re-sign for cheap next season.

I remember thinking when they resigned him that that was a terrible contract, not sure how much value they'll actually get for him. Probably have to move him to someone far from the cap unless they can ship him to NYI for someone like Okposo?
Especially ones with injuries. Maybe a COL type team. I'd rather hold onto him though. People tend to forget that this is his first Nhl season and he has looked alright playing 20+ mins a night

The market is always strong for defensemen, and Liles isn't a bad one. The contract is a little long, but the salary isn't that overboard. Teams I can think of that would be interested in him would be Carolina, Dallas, Nashville, and Detroit. If offseason, you can also add Winnipeg and the Islanders as suitors. I could possibly see him getting a second round pick.

while I wouldn't move him there is no such thing as a nothing pick. Komarov was a 6th rounder, Gunnar a 7th, Reimer, Frattin 4th rounders etc
Since Phaneuf has moved to playing the left side we're overloaded on that side.
Kostka is a RD that we need to hold onto and reink. He doesn't do anything amazing but him being a right D and not having a high cap hit brings a lot of value to the team. His trade value would be little.
Phaneuf, Gunnarson, Liles, Gardiner are all best suited to the left side. Then add in next year Rielly will probably make the team and he is a lefty. As well as Ranger might ink with us and he is best on the left side.
Toronto needs to trade Gunnarson or Liles to open up space on the roster as well as they'd bring back a nice trade return.

With every game he gets more and more exposed. A lot of the penalties he takes are because he blew his coverage so he has to hook or trip the guy who blew by him.

trading liles would be beyond stupid unless the return was unbelievable. by far he's the best PMD we have (in fact really the only one) and he's dirt cheap. not to mention that he's played very well during his time in toronto...
I've been very impressed with Mike Kostka. His ability to read plays defensively has been a huge boost to the Leafs and has helped out immensely on the PK.
He's here to stay IMO. I think Dion Phaneuf, Mike Kostka, Korbinian Holzer, and Mark Fraser are locks to be with the Leafs for the remainder of the year. That means players like JML, Carl Gunnarsson, and Cody Franson are going to battle it out for the final two spots. Mike Komisarek is as good as gone. He'll be a player the Leafs buy out this summer.
I could see two of those three being traded before next year starts to make room for Jake Gardiner.
To me, you've gotta build from the top of your lineup down, see where it shakes out, and who's on the outside looking in. Of course, there's also the consideration of who you want to build around long term/
Our 2 best defencemen are Dion Phaneuf and Carl Gunnarsson... they make for a reasonably good top pair, especially with the way Carlyle has the team playing. From there, your 2nd pair has to include one of JML or Jake Gardiner. Liles is probably the 3rd best defenceman on the team, and Gardiner is obviously a building block. But, they can't play together, and can't play with Kostka. Opposite one of those guys has to be a Fraser, Holzer, or Komsiarek. If you figure that guy is Holzer, Franson/Fraser make for a very solid 3rd pair... which in my mind leaves Kostka on the outside looking in, even with Gardiner in the AHL.
Kostka's been very good this year, but he's really faded in recent games. It seems like part of the reason he looked so good, is the generic level of rust around the NHL with the short camp and him being in midseason form.
Now, I can understand the sentiment for trading Liles, but this team does need SOME veteran presence, and realistically, Liles is the better defenceman, while we're interested in winning.
