I'm not sure if you're a Flyer fan, but if you're not you CLEARLY don't watch Giroux.
He'll literally try any move if he thinks it'll work, that goal he scored against Toronto in the SO was a very risky move.
Either it goes in and he's the hero, or he misses and he's the goat, he felt confident trying the move though because it worked in practice.
The move he did today was a move he probably tried out in practice as well, and decided to use it in the game.
I agree with the announcers though, they said Giroux tried the move because Anderson stopped everything else he threw on net,
So he might as well switch it up
Giroux is a very grounded/humble kid.
I agree with the general sentiment, though I haven't seen the move (yet) myself. It's always like that, though, and when something doesn't pan out, people are always quick to criticize. It's like when a 2-on-1 situation doesn't resolve in a goal, if the player shot the puck people are up in arms why he didn't pass, and if he passes it's why didn't he shoot. But apart from the general knowledge of hockey, these boards, I have to say, have quite the knack for shootouts especially. They know how Bryz should be positioned and what he should do, they know not to have Simmonds be one of the shooters, they know what Giroux mustn't do, even though he probably isn't the third best point-getter in the league because he follows the safest route whenever possible, etc. I get that people are frustrated, but they just come off as smart-***** and generals after the war.
4/6 on the season IIRC. I'm pretty sure each time he's taken a straight shot he's scored.
Yep, he snipes it every time. One was the crossbar and the other, I think, was just wide. None of those fancy moves, just straight shot...and it works.
I don't like the move Giroux tried to pull off, but I'm not going to bash him for it.
It's the shootout. We're in a playoff spot. In all likelihood, we're ending up as the 5th seed regardless of what he does there. I see no issue with guys getting creative. That wasn't the right call there at all, but his contributions DURING the HOCKEY GAME make up for treating the almost meaningless skills competition like a completely meaningless skills competition.
I honestly dont see whats wrong with it though.... its ok for Giroux to do the Datsyuk, and anyone else who goes to do the same dekes, but when he tries something no-one else really does it's wrong? I dont understand that reasoning. Just because everyone doesnt do it, doesnt make it wrong. If we went into next season and half the players started to do the same move, does it make it right then?

Hasn't MSL done that skating backwards backhand, and be rather effective with it?
One of the intentions of the shootout, despite there being an actual point in the standings on the line, is to show off creativity of the players. Since the ice is complete crap by the time we get to it, it's rarely worth doing anything other than skating in and firing. Fewer and fewer people actually do anything. The Coyotes made the playoffs a few years ago because Adrian Aucoin went like 10 for 12 in shootouts by simply walking in and firing one in the same exact spot.

If its preseason game 2 then **** it, do a cartwheel for all I care. But when it's game 78 and that point can mean home ice in the playoffs, well nows not the time to try something different and fun. He's 2 for 2 using the "Datsyuk", (which he first tested out in preseason) keep using it until someone stops it, and with Gs ability I doubt anyone can. Stick with what works when it matters the most.

You do know they zamboni the center of the ice, right? And you're argument is perfect to what I'm saying, if Aucoin decided to do spins, flips and tricks then the Coyotes don't make the playoffs. So you'd rather be entertained for 30 seconds then make the playoffs? Save the creativity and fun for all star weekend, these points matter, stick to what works and screw the fans entertainment in a game that means something.
But this is just another reason why the shootout is a ****ing joke and should be done away with.

They dry scrape the ice. I've seen enough shootouts where pucks still roll off the stick.
Aucoin only got into shootouts because circus show hadn't worked for other players. Personally, I prefer if if guys just walk in and shoot because it's less risk.
However, since the shootout has been such a boon for points over the years, anything that gets the puck into the net should be on the table.
The other option is don't get into a 3-0 hole, and/or don't let it get to a shootout. It's nice the Flyers make these comebacks all the time, but that script will change next week when the games begin to count.
