Canadian Bill C-30 the "Protecting Children from Internet Predators Act"

This is a huge bill on the horizion and it could change the way we have internet in Canada. Here are some basics of what the bill will allow authorities to do (from wikipedia):

Quote:
The bill would grant authorities new powers to monitor and track the digital activities of Canadians in real-time, require service providers to log information about their customers and turn it over if requested, and make back door entrances mandatory allowing remote access of individuals' electronics, each without needing a warrant[2] Documents obtained under the Access to Information Act show that the government desires to use the expanded powers in cases not involving criminality.
Does anyone know the current status of this bill? Whether it is certain to be passed? Does anyone have an idea of what things will look like if this bill is passed? Will the police round up torrent and p2p users? Should we think twice about who can access our emails or facebook? What kind of precaution should one take if this bill is passed? Even though the title of the bill suggests that it is directed towards child predators, it seems that only a small percentage of cases where the authorites request increased access to digital information will have anything to do with child predators.

There was a big kerfuffle over this a few weeks ago when Vic Toews stated that if you didn't support this bill, you were on the side of the pedophiles.

He was rightly roasted for that one, including thousands of #TellVicEverything tweets.

Not sure what the current status of the bill is.

What a ******** name for a bill. This is why government bills shouldn't get anything but a damn number. They can't behave themselves. They just have to politicize and manipulate everything all the way to the names.

It has been discussed in depth in the Canadian Politics thread starting here.
