The sooner, the better.

Looking forward to the next season, John Tavares needs to be given the captaincy of our New York Islanders.

He essentially functions as so in every aspect of the organization except for the physical C on his sweater. He leads this team in points, work ethic, leadership, and represents the organization off of the ice. He represents what we want our organization to be portrayed as.

The sooner he is given the captaincy, the better. Whomever is on our roster next season, we want every one of those players to look up to his image, follow in his footsteps and trust his leadership. The sooner this is put in stone, the sooner this team's image begins to take a turn for the better.

I don't subscribe to the notion that we need to keep the pressure off of him. I'm pretty sure he has more than enough of that already. With the captaincy, he'll be able to hold the entire team responsible.

Love Mark, I think he'll take a step closer to his former self next season, but it's time to anoint our leader for years to come.

I love Tavares, but to de-captain Streit doesn't make this team any better.

How about the sooner we find a defense, the better

Everything you state can be done without even wearing the "C". He has been setting a work ethic example and it seems the team chooses not to follow.

As for Striet, I think he has looked pretty damn good since his OT winning goal. He has been all over the ice, making good offensive decisions and his skill/confidence looks to be way up.

I agree.

Streit has picked up his play the last few weeks. Not only do the isles need Streit to bounce back next season, have a strong season ,they also need him to take on a bigger mentoring role.We are likely going to have 1,possibly 2 of the AHL rookies on next season's roster.

Is Tavares going to stop playing hard if he's wearing an A instead of a C? I doubt it.

Would this be a distraction for the team?Yes,each time the isles play a different team, the between period interviews and questions from the out of town press will be about Streit being stripped of the C and how the players feel about it.

Streit's a ufa in July 2013.If the isles are so unhappy with his play ,then he will likely not be offered an extension. The isles can name Tavares captain going into the 2013-2014 season.

This team is not stripping Streit of the captaincy to give it to JT. If Streit gives it up, that's one thing. But with only one year left on his deal, there's simply no need to take it away from him. JT will keep doing what he does with or without the C.

You people WAY overestimate the importance and impact of team captaincy. We're just as mediocre this year whether or not Tavares has a different level on the front of his jersey.

You do not take the C away from Streit. All of the things you stated can be done without a letter. When Striet Decides to move on from the team only then should JT be considered. you best players do not need to captains of there teams. there are plenty of guys throughout the history of the NHL who have Led without the C.

unless Streit asks to no longer be the captain, I say you don't make a change. No sense in creating an unnecessary and not easily solvable issue.

Tavares should be captain for the 2013-14 season.

One can not simply take away the "C".

We all Know this is Tavares team and he his the leader......When Striets time is over Tavares will wear the "C". But like someone said earlier, taking the "c" Away from Streit does not make the team better.

And it seems that the people in charge are not even striving for mediocrity.
It would make a nice sign:
Isles Goal for 2013-Mediocrity or Bust!

to me, tavares is the captain in every way, except the C on his jersey. something tells me that strait will give him the C. maybe not, but strait wont get it taken away from him.
