Is this the series that sparks a legitimate, epic central division rivalry?
Someone said on the main board GDT that the dirty play by Weber has shades of Lemieux-Draper that sparked the DET-COL rivalry.
I absolutely agree. I don't know about a lot of you, but I've always laughed at the prospect of considering NSH a legitimate rival. They have always been little brother to us over the years, always our central division whipping boy, always our gimme first round opponent.
But I don't think that's the case any more. They finally have a really good cast that can play the part of a hated enemy---two defensemen who are absolute terrors, an absolute monster of a goalie, and a really solid forward corps (which is probably the biggest difference between this year and years past). I mean the additions of Gaustad, Kostitsyn, Gill, and Radulov have really changed the makeup of this team, I can't see anyone honestly believing they didn't win the trade deadline.
There is going to be some serious bad blood between these two teams by the end of this series, and its going to be a long and brutal one.
No way can you compare the Z-Weber incident to Draper-Lemieux. Draper had to have his jaw wired shut. That hit was immensely more vicious. But I believe Detroit and Nashville have already had a decent rivalry for a while now. It's not on par with the Detroit-Colorado feud, nor will it ever be.
Maybe if the two teams were allowed to play. I don't know if you saw the LA-VAN series, but it is shaping up to be the best of the bunch. High intensity, high impact and little official interruption. Mike Richards is my favorite non Wing right now, he played an incredible game.

huh? that game had a massive amount of penalties too
I'm still in shock that there were only a total of four minors last night between Pittsburgh and Philly. That's just amazing when you consider the whistle blew every 30 seconds in our game.
Red wings aren't tough enough for a rivalry like that
Neither are the Predators if that's how you want to define it.
A great rivalry is great because of the awesomely intense back and forth hockey where BOTH teams defeat the others in the playoffs.
If the Avs would've continued to dominate the Wings in the playoffs, the rivalry is like how Columbus fans might think we have a rivalry with them. Obviously that is on a much lesser scale.
Judging by the penalties you'd think it was a super intense game.
But it wasn't. Even the legit calls were little cheating plays like accidental high sticks or tripping. Nothing dirty or outright mean other than the Weber hit at the end.
The series could ramp up. But so far the regular season games vs. the Blues had far more intensity. If we survive long enough to play a series against them, I think that has a much higher chance of sparking a great rivalry.

So? Just because the refs are doing their jobs doesn't mean they are ruining the game... LA and Vancouver deserved most of the penalties they got, except for maybe the Kassian charging. It was a well reffed game.
Lemieux was a puke. Weber is quickly becoming one. Both are equally careless about their actions.
That said, it's not the same. I get why we'd make the comparison, people make comparisons all the time to gain perspective. We feel comfortable with the familiar. But who would go after him for this? We don't have a McCarty or players who would get into 5 on 5 brawls like we used to. Bert would, I know Pav, Stu and a few others would defend themselves but we don't really have the balls to the wall McCarty type of player anymore.

Wow, if only I had like 10 cents for any time I heard, read or anything that in the last 10-15 years. "The wings are old and will soon fall apart".
Yeah... I see... falling apart in wings standard meams piling up 100-point-seasons and losing in the 2nd round of the playoffs
So... yeah, we might fall apart as early as this season. We'll see... But honestly I do not see toooooo many teams that have a head and shoulders better prospect depth then the wings have. And we have some pretty good players locked up longish-term who still have some pretty good hockey left in them. So... I am not willing to panic just yet

The game was ultra boring. This was not an exciting game even for a regular season game. I can't believe this was a playoff game.
The hit was obviously dirty, but no matter how many times Nashville and Detroit get into fights, it's just never all that memorable. Nashville is just a forgettable team, whether they win or not. There will never be a rivalry between the two teams.
I don't see a rival here even if it is an intense series and the Preds win. Preds are going all or nothing this year. They have to sign Weber, Suter, Radulov, Kostitsyen and Gaustad. And those are just the ones that I can think of off the top of my head. They'll be Rivaling Columbus next year.

I agree and I think it may have been because of all the penalty calls.
If you're playing a game where every chintzy little nudge is being called a penalty, do you play with the all-out intensity and playoff fire you should be playing with? Doubtful. More like every move is calculated and you're afraid to try to hard and risk going on the PK AGAIN.
So, League, take that into account when you're going by the old "powerplays make for exciting hockey" rule.
