RD Mark Friedman - Bowling Green, NCAA (2014, 86th, PHI)

First off I apologize if there is a thread made already but I couldn't find one.

And if there isn't a thread already made, I am shocked.

Anyways, the kid is a real impressive RH dman that is very offensive and plays NCAA. A lot of people aren't talking about the guy and IMO it has to do with the fact he is yet another impressive dman in the Philly prospect pool but maybe has gotten lost in the shuffle for hockey fans to follow. When a team currently has Ghost, Provorov, Sanheim, Morin, Myers, etc etc in their prospect pool, it kinda leaves Friedman quietly behind them all amongst hockey fans and talked about very little.

Has been real good in the NCAA and is collecting a lot of awards throughout his years so far. Unsure how his season is going this year so far, but with a quick glance at his stats, it looks like hes doing well once again.

Can anyone comment on him that sees him play on a regular basis?

Flyers fans just hope he signs by the end of this year before they get excited.

Haven't seen a ton of him, but the little I have, he looks like a real solid player. He doesn't appear to be a one-dimensional player either. He's short, but pretty stocky and strong and looks like he can be a capable defender at the next level. Put up some impressive numbers in the USHL at his age and was thought to be a good powerplay QB during his draft year so there might be more offense than the numbers show. He's intriguing. RHD are always nice to have too.

Wouldn't be surprised to see him pull a Vesey

There's just too many great D prospects ahead of him, and he'll surely get an opportunity somewhere else

Provorov, Sanheim, Morin, Myers, Ghost, Gudas even taking up a RHD slot

That's certainly a fear among Flyer fans.

I've seen him play a handful of times in person post draft. He plays a ton of minutes and in all situations. Definitely gotten noticeably better on the PK in particular over the past couple of years. He's got the sort of sturdy build that seems to translate better than some other types for shorter, positionally sound defensemen.

As FlyGuy said, the biggest thing is getting him signed. He's absolutely got #4/PP2 or so upside and a decent chance to be an NHLer.

that was gonna be my next question... if there is fear amongst Flyer fans that he wont sign. This is his 3rd year in NCAA and you know he has looked at Flyers depth chart many times and sees the players ahead of him that are still ridiculously young.

im not a Leaf fan, but I see he is from Toronto... hmmmm does he dare consider that??? You'd have to imagine so if the opportunity came. Should be an interesting time ahead to see what happens

or potentially him for free if they wait it out till he potentially becomes a UFA

But if Leafs didn't wanna play the UFA game, then maybe they do try acquiring him

It maybe should be in this situation, he'd have to realize how impossible it will be to work his way into that roster

Since this was posted today on the Flyers forum, might as well share. We likely find out in the Spring if he decides to join LV in the AHL. If he doesn't, the he could be going back to college and exploring the UFA route.

Friedman was a third-round draft pick of the NHLs Philadelphia Flyers in 2014, while Nell was one of the most sought after goalies last season as an undrafted free agent. Both were first-team All-WCHA picks last season.

If Friedman and Nell turn pro and forego their senior seasons at BG, Bergeron hopes their decisions will come quickly after the season ends.

I do believe people will either make a play for those players or they wont, in terms of professional teams, Bergeron said. Those two players will address that and put it behind them, either they will sign because its in their best interests professionally and hockey-wise, or they wont.

I dont expect it will drag out into the summer. Thats going to be our focus with the (players), that we think you should put this on the front burner, make your decision and move on.

If Nell turns pro, goalie Eric Dop will join BG next season. Dop signed his national letter of intent last month. Hes playing for Tri-City in the USHL where he has a 2.55 goals-against and a .912 save percentage in nine games.

If Nell returns for his senior season, Dop will join the Falcons the following season, and BG would look to sign another goalie.

Freshman Ryan Bednard also will return in goal for BG.

If Friedman leaves, the Falcons will bring in another defenseman for next season.

The smooth-skating Friedman is BGs third-leading scorer this season, totaling 15 points in 21 games. He has five goals and 10 assists. Friedman is an offensive defenseman whose defensive play has steadily improved at BG.

The current Flyers D is, Provorov, Ghostisbehere and Gudas excluded, beyond crap.

The addition of rock solid second tier guys like Friedman "can" make them legitimate contenders for years.

I'd more than pissed if he pulls a Vessey.

At some point I hope for

Provorov - Friedman
Sanheim - P. Myers
Ghost - Gudas (or Morin if he gets it done)

Eh....he could leave, I don't know what he's thinking, but the situation isn't THAT unviable for him. Provorov, Morin, Sanheim, Ghost are all LHD. Myers and Friedman are the only RHD prospects of real note. Ghost plays RD because he can, and it's a need right now. Sanheim is playing RD in the AHL because again it's a need, and he would probably be better off on the left. So, with Gudas here 3 more years on the right, the roster could look like this:

Provorov-Myers
Sanheim-Gudas
Morin-Ghost

What happens to Gudas after his current deal is anyone's guess. Whether all the prospects work out so neatly is up in the air. One could be traded in several years. Also, being in the organization as a draft pick for 3 years, he knows how well the ship is run in Philadelphia, and there's a comfort factor; he could see how well other d prospects are being developed and think he can trust his own development in their hands. Plus, Bowling Green just isn't that good of a team and he is beyond that stage of his career already. I imagine he's itching to turn pro instead of going back for 1 more year. He'd probably be on the top pair on the Phantoms next year, or splitting time with Myers. There's been no indication he'd take the UFA route, so right now seems much ado about nothing.

He has a ton of defensive players/prospects ahead of him on the depth chart, so it looks like he's not afraid of a little competition, which is good.

I'm sure that knowing how nice a play Allentown is to play will help too! As he is a guy who was almost certainly spending time in the AHL whatever.

But yeh, good to have a guy who will back himself.

Exactly... IMO that speaks volumes about the guy. He could have very easily gone back to school and then picked and chose his easiest route to the NHL next year like some kids do. Love it

Sounds like an economist. I don't think hockey is going to work out for him.

He could make his debut in one of the Phantoms games this weekend.
