There were Ranger fans that thought his first 20 games, was more indicative of his true ability as a goaltender than his previous 500 games. There were Ranger fans, whom legitimately wanted Talbot to take the reigns as the starter over Lundqvist (even though Talbot has had significantly easier starts).

People wanted Talbot... A career AHL goaltender, to start over a 5x Vezina Nominated Goaltender, 1x Vezina Winner, Hart Finalist and Gold Medalist. TALBOT. When bringing up his accolades, fans would say that's "what he did" and sports is a "performance based business" and based on his performance "Talbot should be starting."

Other fans were exploring the idea of trading Lundqvist, acquiring assets for him, and letting Talbot be the next generation goaltender in New York. Meanwhile, in the last 15-20 games, Lundqvist has played at a level that Talbot couldn't even dream of. Pretty much, whenever there is a grade A chance against Talbot, it goes in. He is great when you limit the chances he faces, but when truly tested, he cannot bring the same level of play.

Right now, it doesn't matter if it's a grade A chance or not, Lundqvist is stopping everything. Whether it's Chicago, Detroit, or Philadelphia he is shutting down the door.

Ranger fans will refute this, but there was over 1,000 posts in a "What the HELL is Wrong With Lundqvist" thread, and a "Start Talbot More Consistently" thread. It was all too comical.

General fans thought Giroux was finished after the first 20 games of the season. He was no longer a top forward in the league. He wouldn't return to his PTS/GM level. Today, he has been one of the most productive forwards to date.
I think you're being too hard on Talbot. Yes the team played great in front of him in most of his starts, but you don't get the stats he has through more than a couple of games if you can never stop a grade A chance. He just has a style that looks like he's not trying hard when he makes saves. Lundqvist is just way flashier.

There's a reason I don't frequent the Rangers board on this website, and this is it. The extremes that board has after a win/loss is insane.

Lundqvist sucked his first 30 or so games. Pointing it out doesnt mean you hate him or want him traded.

Glad hes found his game.

No it doesn't. However, saying he was only good because of pads or Torts, starting threads about making Talbot the starter, or saying we should trade him does.

Great post, couldn't agree more.

I made the graph a while back, his current season's rolling average has continued straight up from where it ended in the picture to 95%+.

This includes every game bar last night's game vs the Avs:

Interesting that he tends to have his worse play right around game 30 like this year and then reverts back to dominant. This is exactly what the other countries were fearing heading into sochi. Right up there with Canada and Russia as favorites.

I think it is pretty amazing how in his first 25 games and last 20 games every year the trend is so similar year to year.

Hank had some really bad games to start the year, when the ENTIRE team, virtually without exception, struggled and we got blown out a few times. He then had a pretty rough streak prior to the New Year. When you consider how those stretches factor into his stats and then still look at his overall numbers this year, in which they're included, he's clearly been absolutely top notch outside of those down swings. It certainly looks as it this years' struggles are firmly behind him and Hank is looking just as good as he ever has. The guy is just an incredible goaltender and it's nice to have him back on his game. Sweden is definitely my team to watch, besides USA, in Sochi.

Does he always start slow and get better? I remember last season he struggled at first and then got progressively better as the season went on.

When henrik goes, so do the rangers.

Teemu Selanne is not actually the flash. Or a finnish version of him.

But don't worry kids, Santa is still real.
