I don't think it's so much that, just that Semin was the last of the big names available, so this is the straw that broke the camels back for some people. The hate comes from a culmination of all players we "missed out on".
I'm frustrated in this off-season, but I know games aren't won on paper. As a said in a earlier post, if the team isn't better in one year from now, I think Holland's period of resting on his laurels is up and I want him gone.
How our current players progress and how our prospects progress will have a lot to do with it. Obviously the team needs to, and seems to, have faith in their draft picks. I'm convinced that a few of them will be very good NHLers.
The team will need to get better whether that is from within or going outside via trade or FA. If the team isn't getting better from within and nothing is done, then I will start to doubt Holland and the Red Wings plan going forward. Right now they need to see what they actually have in Smith, Nyquist, Tatar, Quincey, Kindl, Ericsson, Mursak, Filppula, etc.

Another reason fans are upset is because last year, maybe even two years ago we could have let our young guys get experience, instead of signing a vet to eliminate the chance of bringing up the rookies.
I think the over-ripening philosophy needs to be thrown out the window, every year we have left of datsyuk and zetterburg is precious.
The past two years have been utter failures with A. not getting an upgrade, or B. getting a player to block a prospect.

And even this year they'll have to move someone to give one or two of those prospects a look up front. Add Abdelkader to the mix and we have 16 forwards signed who could/should make the team. Not coincidentally, we could lose no one to waivers if we demote Nyquist and Brunner for sake of "organizational depth."

What exactly is Tootoo, Bertuzzi, and Samuelson. Good pickups/resigns but definitively blocking prospects.
1. Dats
2. Zets
3. Cleary
4. Franzen
5. Filppula
6. Helm
7. Bertuzzi
8. Miller
9. Eaves WAIVE?
10. Abdelkader
11. Samuelson
12. Tootoo
13. Emmerton WAIVE
14. Mursak WAIVE
15. Nyquist
16. Brunner
17. Tartar (should be our 13th forward)
18. Sheahan
19. Andersson (should be our 13th forward)
Only 12-14 forward spots. It only slightly makes sense if we assume Emmerton/Mursak are valueless and wavier fodder. (Its probably true). I have long advocated moving Abdelkader just because he has value.
They may not be "ready," right away, but if they can show good progress, I'd be glad to see that.
Kinda like Matt stafford for the lions, he was thrown into the wolves on a team that won zero games the year prior, people thought it would ruin him, but he looks to be a superstar soon.
The wings are no where near how bad the lions were, and we have a few top notch guys these rookies could learn from by being thrown in a little earlier.
Not really a Red Wings fan but since I'm swedish and since I love puck possession hockey I do follow them a bit. I admire the Red Wings leadership because they show faith in their system and patience with the development of their players, something I think other teams should take notice of.. however one can always over do things, too..
In my opinion Holland is probably better off by not panicking because of his recent failures to acquire the big names. Doan is old. Semin has questionable character, supposedly. Sure, it doesn't look like this team will contend this year.. but it could be worse. Like signing the wrong players on the wrong contracts or trading away the farm for the wrong player. I'm not sure Rick Nash was what this team needs, since the hole on defense looks much worse and is both a more urgent matter as well as a long term problem.
The one, big question mark for me that makes me wonder what is going on inside Hollands mind is the signing of Mikael Samuelsson. Why..the... hell.. ??
Overall, I do not think Holland should be fired because of this. Not even if you take into account the supposed decline since 2009.
However, if this scenario repeats next summer.. then changing the leadership should become a legitimate question.

I don't deny that there are some reasons to levy criticism towards that signing. But he's a RH shot for the PP, he's familiar with the team and system, and he has some size.
