Some thoughts

- Fix the PK (to last year's standards) and this game isn't even close
- Ovi started off slow but came on towards the end. He looked a little tired, which I expected considering he just got back from Russia yesterday
- Backstrom played like a man possessed. I hope he can keep up this form.
- Semin was fantastic
- 3rd line looks awesome
- Can't fault Neuvy for any of the goals

Ovechkin was fine. Not great, but far from bad. Perrault worked hard, just didn't get much done. He wasn't terrible either.

Ovechkin was not a dominant force. That's all. Perreault is guilty of not being MoJo. The Caps need a #2 C and you can see MP's size becoming an issue in games like tonights. The Canes came to play hard.

Neuvirth good and Brouwer bad, what? Neuvirth was very, very average. I can't fathom an argument that he was a positive. Meanwhile, Brouwer seemed average as well - didn't do much but bad? Why?

My $0.02: it wasn't pretty, there's certainly a long way to go, but it's 2 points. Time to move on to Tampa, a more important division game, and hope for the same 2 points minus the opponent getting 1.

All in all not a bad game.....every player seemed to play hard...the caps flubbed some easy chances and got stoned on some others plus Ovie looked a bit tired which was expected. Halpern had a good game considering he hasn't eaten all day nor did he skate in the morning because of yom kippur. So a good win under their belt...

Brouwer was useless on offense, but he had to cover for MP on defense for the entire game. MP was beyond useless, and a defensive liability. I hope BB gives Johansson a jersey. There is no way he'll be worse than what MP showed today.

Neuvirth did what he does. Make timely saves. The goals against him would have required great saves. He made some. Didn't make others. Brouwer looks out of place to me with players like Semin and MP.

Backstrom in his old form bodes very well.

I have no idea what you are talking about. He had no shot on any of the 3 goals allowed, unless he was going to pull one of those Tim Thomas full layout dives across the crease and snag the puck out of midair. All 3 goals were 1 in 100 save situations from the goalie's perspective. At best. Then he stopped the other 28 shots he faced, including a couple of tough shots through traffic. How is that "very very average"?

Brouwer made one great backhand stretch pass to semin but otherwise they didn't mesh well offensively. If this is his game he might end up fitting better with Ovie. Would have liked to see Hamrlik shoot more, especially on the pp. Liked Perreault's hustle but he didn't follow the flow of play well enough. Overall not as bad as the score suggests I think.

Only one game, but I am really impressed. Backstrom and Green looked great. I loved Backstrom stepping into Tlusty during the 2nd Period. Semin took that penalty, but he just seems like a different guy. I really am excited this season has started. Looking forward to Monday.

Before he took that penalty I thought Semin was the best Cap on the ice. He scored, he backchecked, he moved the puck, he won board battles. Brouwer looked better with Ovi because he pretty much only played the boards and in front of the net. Semin likes to pass and cycle the puck. He gave a lot of good passes to Brouwer, who could not control almost any of them.

I don't think anyone replied to you so -- Hamrlik was with Green, Schultz with Wideman. I think they're trying to reduce Greenie's TOI, so Hamrlik and Wideman have been getting some PP time.

The good:

-3rd line looked great
-Definite signs from 8 and 19 (especially 19) that they'll be back in form
-Alzner looks like he'll be a beast this season
-Jeff Schultz's low ice time

THe bad:

-Special teams
-Perrault's play
-Jeff Schultz's ice time

The thing that surprised me about 19 tonight was how fast he looked. I'm not used to that from him.

Didn't Backstrom say he worked on his skating a lot this summer? Maybe it's paid off.
