Don Cherry

Cherry calls out 3 players who were enforcers and calls them hypocrites on Thursday night.
The players were Jim Thompson, Stu Grimson and Chris Nilan.
He basically said they said enforcers generally drink more and take drugs due to their role on the team.

All 3 were on OTR on TSN and said they never said such a thing plus Thompson called him a hypocrite for preaching safe hockey, safe equipment etc but is all for fighting just to sell videos.

All 3 said they would like an apology.

Lets see what Cherry has to say.

Time to bob and weave Don.

Not sure how to attach a link from my cell ,but you can hear his "response" on fan590 website. DC rarely apologizes nor admits mistakes and that didn't change here.

Once a guy I used to love listening to, he's nothing more than a blowhard who would fit in nicely on TMZ or writing for the Enquirer.

Sorry, but I don't think you're representing what he said very well.

He said he thought that over history that although there have been a number of deaths of athletes/hockey players, that until this summer the trend was not that it was oriented towards fighters. He called out all those using this as an excuse for promoting their own agendas to stop fighting because of suicides. He called out the 3 players because in spite of having been fighters, that he believes they are calling for a ban on fighting. Grimson and Nilan indicated they're not on record for wanting fighting banned, however Thompson certainly is, and on OTR he confirmed he is. Cherry certainly said nothing about the drug or other habits of these guys.

If Don gets ahold of that, it'll be interesting tonight. I'd be rather surprised if he speaks French though...

From TSN OTR:

"I don't think you should get rid of fighting," said Nilan, contradicting Cherry's accusation.

Saw a segment about this on On the Fly last night. Immediate reactions:

1) Why is Cherry dressed like a Christmas present in early October?
2) Chris Nilan is a Boston character from a Saturday Night Live parody personified.

Don Cherry is an extreme personality. It's what he does. In general, I like him and the honesty/passion he brings, but calling anyone out as a hypocrite is dangerous.

Cherry is the same as he always was, if you used to like him, I fail to see what has changed...maybe you are more politically correct than you used to be.

Here you go

Quote:

In english whit reverso traduction.

Chris Nilan dropped gloves often in his career(quarry) of 13 seasons in the LNH. The former(ancient) badass believes that this aspect of the game(set, play) is exceeded.

" To be honest, I do not understand why that is still a part of the sport, admits openly Nilan, who ended his(her) career(quarry) with 3043 minutes of penalties. We should completely abolish fights, because they have anyway no more the utility which they have already had. "

Yes, I know that.

That specific suit screams Christmas. I'd expect to see him wearing that in December, not October. Although I guess the poinsettia suit is appropriate for December as well.

Why should Cherry apologize? He's bang on with this one. Sure he says other things that might not be right and whatnot, but on this, he's hit the nail on the head. It's just that people are too soft to hear the truth, he called those guys out and called out the media, they exploited those guys' deaths to push their anti-fight agenda, those are the ones that should be apologizing.

I don't always agree with Don, but he always speaks from the heart, and that's refreshing to see. He grew up in the game, and understands a lot of things that most guys won't come out and admit, and we don't usually hear from others. Don knows more about the game than most of us ever will know.

I can see his point on this, these guys made their living doing this. What would today's enforcers say, if they were questioned. Would they say, yeah I shouldn't be doing this, I'll go take a job pumping gas?

On the other hand, the guys out of the game have a point also. They went through it, and understand the pitfalls. No doubt the lifestyle of the enforcer will result in off-ice problems for some. Knowing that you will be going out and get pummeled by someone bigger and stronger is not the same as some of us who sit behind a desk all day.

I don't care about all this. I just want to ask did anyone see Chris "Knuckles" Nilan?

Man did he look in rough shape like he has been on a 15 year bender.

For what it's worth, I heard what Nilan had to say on the subject,it was quite the opposite of what Cherry acussed him of saying.I'm not a Nilan fan by any means, but that is not what he said at all.He is a regular on sports radio show here and I get to listen to him often, what he said was that he enjoyed the fighting and didn't lose any sleep on it .He actually called out Laraque for saying players lost sleep and were stressed out from knowing they had to fight to keep thier jobs, asked him to speak for himself.

His last sentence nailed it, they don't want to see guys make the same living they did. Their attitude would be completely different if they were still in the league making money with their fists.

I read Grimson's comments a while back though and I don't remember them being that out of line.
