Canada sports network predictions; ESPN staff picks

Doug Mclean from sportsnet has picked us to win the cup, and marc crawford from tsn has picked us to with.

Take it for what its worth, but at least we are getting some recognition.

The Score picked the Flyers to be the most disappointing team.

They also picked JVR to be the league's break out fantasy player.

Depth wins Cups, as evidenced by all cup winners in recent memory...

If it turns out we have depth AND a goalie, then there's a good shot. It's not like the other major players in our conference don't have their own problems to worry about as well.

The real question is how much scoring will come out of Voracek, Jagr, Couturier, Schenn, Read, and vanRiemsdyk. That's the question mark.

If JVR has a huge year points wise like they say, then the rest of the team better suck because if he has a big year more signs point to us not being dissapointing.

Take it for what it's worth... but I predict us to win the cup for the next 69 years.

And you can take that to the bank.

ESPN's staff picks. Barnaby picked the Flyers.

What is it with the love for the Sabres? Maybe with Shanahan's early disciplinarian approach, the panelists think that diving will be a prized commodity. The Bruins have to be the favourites to come out of the Northeast. I can understand the Caps and Canucks by unanimous decision, but the Hawks?

I dont work for TSN or CBC, but I'm a well informed hockey fan and follow the NHL like religion. The off-season moved made by Holmgren were genius. Too many snipers means they all cant have icetime to shine. Giving the reigns to JVR and Giroux will pay huge dividends. These two in particular will be scary good.

Not to mention a top 5 goalie, solid D, and depth oozing from all lines. Oh yeah, proven clutch playoff performers...it takes guys like Briere, Pronger (hate), hartnell and Jagr.

From an oiler fan, philly is an embarrassment of riches. This team is set up to be a cup contender for several years.

A long winded way of saying, the Flyers are also MY PICK to win the cup.

I don't get how the Flyers can be favorites when no one has seen the new team play yet. Don't get me wrong, ditching Carter and Cannon may be the best thing to happen to the team, but favorites? I don't know. In order for us to be favorites Pronger absolutely needs to be healthy for the playoffs and I just can't see that happening.

If anything I think Boston is set to repeat or Los Angeles may even run the tables in the West.

I do love the picks for Washington and San Jose though. How many times are pundits going to pick those teams before they move on to the other hot commodity?

I think Bryz is the biggest reason for our pick. Our D is intact -all be it needing Pronger for the whole season will be impt as you mentioned. The team looks very scary on paper - which is what they base their predictions on.

Totally agree with WSH and SJ tho - hurts my head

They haven't seen anyone play yet. It's just a prediction. Besides how much more do you really know about an entirely rebuilt team after a game or two anyway? The team we are seeing now is likely not a finished product exactly.

Also, should they stop picking Washington and San Jose just for the sake of making a new pick? The fact that they haven't won it all isn't exactly proof that they can't. The Sharks had a nice run last year in spite of Niemi kinda sucking. Those are good teams that merit a pick.
