Game Preview

St. Louis Blues captain David Backes isn't too concerned following his team's season-opening loss.

A visit from the Calgary Flames, however, might make him change his mind.

The Blues try to avoid opening a season with back-to-back defeats for the first time in five years Monday afternoon when they host a Flames team that swept last season's series and has routinely given St. Louis fits at the Scottrade Center.

The Blues (0-1-0) had several chances in Saturday's opener against Nashville, outshooting the Predators 33-16, but only Jason Arnott and Patrik Berglund found the back of the net in a 4-2 loss.

It was an inauspicious start for St. Louis, which opened last season with six straight home victories and didn't lose in regulation at the Scottrade Center until Nov. 27 - its 10th contest there.

"We'll call this speed bump in the road No. 1, nothing to panic about," Backes said. "We outshot them 2 to 1, we just didn't bury our chances, and they did."

Although Backes isn't worried, starting with consecutive defeats for the first time since opening 0-2-1 in 2006-07 seems possible with a home game against Calgary.

The Flames (0-1-0) outscored the Blues 14-3 in winning all four meetings last season. They've also won six of seven in St. Louis, and are 11-2-1 there since 2003-04.

Captain Jarome Iginla and goaltender Miikka Kiprusoff have been instrumental to this success.

Iginla had five goals and two assists against the Blues last season, and has 10 goals and eight assists in his last seven games in St. Louis.

Kiprusoff was between the pipes for all four games in last season's series, posting a 0.75 goals-against average and two shutouts. In 22 games versus the Blues since 2003-04, he is 18-2-2 with a 1.75 GAA, his best winning percentage and lowest GAA against any team he has faced at least nine times.

Kiprusoff, who needs one win to become the franchise leader at 263, has also recorded a 1.98 GAA in winning nine straight games in St. Louis since a 3-2 shootout loss on Jan. 30, 2006.

Like the Blues, the Flames are also coming off an uneven performance in their first game.

Curtis Glencross' goal allowed Calgary to take a 1-0 lead into the first intermission Saturday against Pittsburgh. But the Flames were outshot 16-5 in the second period as the Penguins scored four times.

Calgary regrouped in the third and scored two goals to pull within one, but Pittsburgh added an empty netter to hand the Flames a 5-3 loss.

"The second period is definitely what cost us," said Iginla, who sat out the preseason because of back spasms. "We got sloppy, we had way too many turnovers, we didn't play good hockey.

"We played the whole period in our zone because of it. In the first and third, we were solid, but we can't give any team a period like we gave them."

The Flames last opened with back-to-back losses in 2008-09.

MY PERSONAL TAKE

I am not sure there could have been a worse team for us have a "rebound" game against after the lackluster home opener. The Flames swept the season series from us last year in fairly easy fashion. For our Blues to come out on top in this one we have to find a way to shutdown the bonafide blue killer Iginla and solve the always frustrating Kipper.

If we lose tomorrow, I am advocating a return to the half-assed GDT. Hoping that won't be necessary

I wasn't part of these boards last year so I am unaware of these half-assed GDTs but if the majority wants it I will stop making mine.

I like having a real GDT and Blanick does a good job. It's not like the half-assed ones worked for us last year.

I think kittensmasher's post was made in jest. I'm certainly not going to look a gift horse in the mouth. I have appreciated your GDT thus far. Half-Assed GDTs were born out of the combination of necessity and laziness, and suited this board just fine during their reign, however I think most would agree that they prefer the job you are doing now.

I honestly like these full GDTs, but its bad voodoo to make GDTs before game day.

Nah dude, I was just joking. You've been doing a really nice job with the GDTs and your efforts are definitely appreciated

Well thanks for the support. Also, I normally would wait to make the GDT until the day of but since we have an early start time tommorow and I'm on vacation this week I knew I prob won't wake up until damn near game time so I figured get it done a little ahead of time.

Wow, 11 replies, I thought you'd all be discussing game...

Langenbrunner demoted to bottom six? I'm thinking yes.

yeah, I love early GDTs and these "real" GDTs are so much better

what I don`t like is that Grachev has to sit again.
it seems to get exactly how I feared it would get: they play the oldies and sit the youth out even if they play as good or better
still hope I`m wrong...

I'll continue to joke about half-assed GDTs....but thanks for the effort to provide a real one.

I'm a little concerned about Halak not being very sharp. I also think the Blues' defense is over-rated a bit (after one game).

I LOVE the Oshie/Berglund/Stewart line.

Leaving work in ten minutes to go to the game. I used up the last of my time off in August. I might get fired.

Go Blues!

Ok, really want the blues to come out with some fire but not rush everything like they did the first game.2mm I'm stoked about that line, that's a lot of talent size and speed that we have not had in a long time. I'm thinking it will end up be our "1st line" and get more ice time than the other three. Let's go Blues!

We may not really see it until the 2nd half of the season, but don't forget how great Perron/McDonald have been together. Them with Backes is going to be another fantastic line.

A healthy Blues roster is going to be a pain for opponents to defend.
