This. He was going 150% every second he was out there, his stamina is ridiculous. Starting in the D zone, rushing into the offensive zone, getting back on D, playing defense then jumping up on the rush again. He did this ALL GAME. It was crazy.

And as a Pens fan, the only reason I would take him over any other defenseman is because he only makes 3.5 million for the next 3 years. That's so valuable to a team against the cap.

I certainly don't think any of Staal, Boyle, Keith (given last season), or Suter are on a tier above Letang. They're all very comparable, IMO.

Whatever our individual preferences though, nils2317's original assertion that Letang's a borderline top 10 defenseman is pretty reasonable. Conservative even, but I understand not wanting to give away the farm after one breakout season.

Glad to see this topic hasn't spiraled out of control with Penguins hate and some people can actually appreciate a good player that plays on a team that isn't their own. Tanger is having a good start but obviously the Norris talks are a bit premature. I'm just happy he continues to improve. His shot could use some work still but it'll get there eventually.
Better than the NHL's leading scorer? Nah.

The OP clearly had a point.

"Letang has 28 minutes of ice time tonight.

I continue to be impressed."

Pretty sure he hit the mark.

Should come out to about 28 minutes. At least, it tends to for Pitkanen.

28+ minutes 34 times two seasons ago. Played 29:52 and 31:11 in a back-to-back situation.

Southern hockey market. Unless you're a superstar, it's as bad as being in the West.

There once was a thread about Ovechkin ripping a fart during an interview that ended up going on for about 10 pages. At least this thread is actually discussing a young star player's abilities.

And apparently trashing anyone who disagrees. Staal is definitely a top-tier defenseman. Letang is getting there, but his performance with Crosby last year compared to his performance without Crosby last year brings up a lot of questions about how good he really is.

What was it? 36 points, +23 in the 41 games with Crosby, 14 points, -7 in the 41 without him?

I don't care for the Pens, but that is your personal opinion and not consensus locks whatsoever. The only players on your list I would clearly place over Letang are Chara, Lidstrom, Keith, Weber and Doughty. I would pick Letang over most of the peers list without even blinking.

Letang is quickly becoming a fav dman of mine. Maturing fast and I honestly don't think a guy like Doughty will be much better.

Wow.I post two threads on Letang. What's weird is I used to dislike the Penguins until last year.

And who was Letang playing with during Crosby and Mallkin's absence? He benefits from playing with Crosby, but all dmen are dependent on forwards to an extent.

are you serious? you mean his production has fallen when the Pens lost their two best players by far? who would have thought? and all this while logging massive minutes used in all situations and with Orpik out for a part of the season...

I'd love to hear your argument on why Staal is a better denfender than Letang.

Staal is definitely a top-tier D-man and Letang is not? Right.

This is a worthy thread?

Karlsson had multiple 27+ minute games last season while putting up 45 points under the worst offensive team in the league, and doing it while 20 years old.

Right? It's like the thread title clearly implies that the fact that he played 28 minutes is the topic or something..

He's obviously a very, very good #1 D man but the title of the thread is bringing the conversation away from general evaluation of him toward something much less impressive.

Staal and Letang are comparable as far as their position in their development. A year or so and they both can be top tier. I'll give ypu that one. Boyle is definitely above Letang. Fringe top tier but above Letang. Keith and Sutter not? Are you a moron? You want to tag Keith for last year? How about Letang falling off the face of the planet half ways through the season last year?

I'd be hard pressed to say Letang is better than Suter. But Keith had an ordinary season, last season.

Haha that's what I was thinking when I read the title and the OP. I thought, "Damn... Suter and Weber both had over 27 minutes without OT...", but apparently this is no longer about the ice time. I was not aware that HF Boards was in the dark about how Letang is a good defenseman...

28 minutes in an OT game?

Dan Boyle laughs at him... Letang really needs to man up.
