General Laptop Discussion Thread

Since we seem to have a new thread about buying advice or problems, I figured we could sticky a general thread f it gets enough interest. To get started, I am going to buy this laptop. Any experiences with it?

I already know I want it based on my needs, I'm just wondering if anyone had problems, good experiences etc.

Never owned that particular model, our office has a model in a similar price range and it works fine though. If you aren't expecting to game I say go for it.

Not to hijack this thread or anything, but around what temperature should a laptop typically be at?

This is bad, right?
(Running VLC, Opera, MSN, Outlook only)

Did you try an alternative temperature monitor software like speedfan or realtemp?

I frankly don't believe those numbers, I think your laptop would be thermaling and shut down.

If it actually is running that hot then perhaps that's not hot enough to trigger a thermal shutdown, but I wouldn't run it at those temps. Try and clean the vents, listen to make sure the fans are working.

What temp does it run at on idle? (no programs loaded, just at desktop).

Oh and what model of laptop is it?

Looks decent. I wouldn't pay $600 for it though but that's just me. But checking the prices on other sites for that model it is a good price.

Actually, I joke that my computer is indestructible crap
It's like 3-4 years old, HP Pavilion tx2000 (tablet series)
I actually had it go up to 97 or something before without crashing, but the right side of my laptop (where the HD and vent is on) was literally scalding to the touch

Here's a picture with no programs running

I'm guessing buying a laptop fan isn't even going to cut it at this point?

Somehow I knew it would be a TX2000 series

They have a heat problem reputation. Some say it's due to the crappy thermal compound used on those models. If you are industrious you could take apart the laptop and re-apply the thermal compound to the CPU/heatsink. I bet that will fix the problem, along with an air duster cleaning.

I hate taking apart laptops and this doesn't look like fun to me:

Maybe I'll just wait to get a new desktop then I can lessen the load on my poor laptop.
That guide looks good, but I'm 90% sure you don't get it right on the first try. I don't want to brick anything yet, since this is my only comp and midterms are coming up

Do it once you already have the funds to replace it. I'm fairly certain the odds of bricking it are slim. Getting it wrong/right on the first try isn't too big a concern. Either you put too much or too little, it's fairly obvious if it doesn't work out which way you went

If the stuff is leaking out the side... yeah too much. It's really only about a dime sized or less amount that you need. When you open it up you'll probably notice it's just all dried out.

Yeah you probably won't brick it, but what can happen is on laptops a lot of them have very tiny tabs and things where they keyboard goes in and they are easily snapped. Cheap plastic.

I had to change the under keyboard RAM on my HP and that was nerve wracking .

On average, how long do you own a laptop before you replace it?

My first laptop was from 2006 to 2011 so 5 years. Upgraded to an XPS 15 in April.

You are a moderator now? Wow, never thought I'd see the day

But, looks like you are about ready for a new laptop, what are you thinking of getting?

I've had this Dell since summer 08, it's been dying since summer '11 so I'm waiting for some money to make it's moves and I'll be buying a Toshiba soon.

I got a used Dell 17R N7010 17.3" i5 in mint condition for $300 off Craigslist..seems to be quite the steal at that price. I actually only bought it to re-sell on eBay, but I've been using it and it's a solid laptop..might have to keep it.
