You guys are crazy. We're talking about someone who was top 5 in the draft by many different people. He scored 83 points in his first season of the OHL and he is a center. Now he gets hurt and suddenly all of his talent is gone? C'mon. If he drops, I doubt it will be out of the top 15. Definitely won't make it to the 2nd round.
Never once did I question his talent. Never once did I say his talent is gone.
First off, this guy was never a guaranteed elite NHL player, nor is anyone. With any pick, there is assumed risk. Some have less risk then others, obviously. In addition to the added risk of drafting a player, Galchenyuk has the baggage of having to recover from an ACL tear, which is the single most devastating injury any athlete can have (among the more common injuries. Obviously a broken spine would be worse.)
You're asking a kid to transition into the best hockey league in the world while recovering from a horrible injury. And it's not a broken finger or a sprained ankle. This is an ACL tear. Needless to say, he's going to drop. In some years, it's a good risk to pick up the kid if he falls to far. With the talent in this draft, taking this kid would be foolish, IMO. He has the talent to be one of the best in this class. With this injury, he has the potential to really burn you.
I'm not saying he's going to suffer the same fate Malkin is suffering, but the risk is there.

Who said he has to go into the NHL right after he gets drafted? He has plenty of time to recover.
So if the same thing happened to Yakupov or Grigorenko you don't draft them?

Putting him immediately into the NHL was likely in the cards for whoever drafted him. I think the smart thing to do would be to recover in juniors or some other league. Either way, he still has a lot of risk if picked early. There is plenty other talent out there.

If it was an ACL tear, no I would not draft them.
I'm not one to be afraid of injuries, but an ACL tear is one you do not want to mess with. I studied anatomy in college and IIRC, the likelihood of a 18-25 year old re-tearing a repaired ACL is somewhere around 20%.
I think it's likely he'll drop, at least a little and a team that maybe is picking early that is already deep with prospects may take a chance on him if he is available any time after #10. A team like Washington, with Colorado's 1st rounder, may be in that position. Also, if a bunch of forwards go and he's still around, if a team is looking forward and the talent + the risk of Galy outweighs a more safe pick without the upside, that could be a match. If we don't make the playoffs, he could be in play bt if we do, I'd say forget about him as he won't drop past 12 or 13 in my opinion. 7-10 spot most likely.

I think it would be a mistake for Washington to pass up on a talented defenseman in the draft. They have plenty of talented forwards and forward prospects.
Though the Flames haven't done the best job developing him, Mikael Backlund blew out his knee his draft year and slipped to the Flames. Not a finished product by any means, but just because a guy blows out his knee before he gets drafted doesn't mean he isn't going to make it. I can see Galchenyuk going in the late-teens to early-twenties. Can you imagine if Detroit landed him?

I'm more worried Washignton gets him with one of their 2 first round picks.

Alex Galchenyuk underwent successful surgery this morning. Have a speedy recovery. Can't wait to see you back on the ice w/the Sarnia Sting.

NHL.com did a 2012 draft today. I know we've played less games than most but it was weird seeing the Devils drafting so high again(5th). We got our C in one mock and passed up on Dumba and Ebert in the other two.
So, although it's very early, with the draft being held in Pittsburgh, is anyone thinking about taking a ride out there?
I'm kicking around the idea and would love to team up to share expenses...most of the hotels out there are a couple hundred a night.
I'm thinking of going. I'm not sure if I actually will be able to though.

I saw that. I didn't really pay attention to the positioning of the teams because it will definitely be different by the end of the season. I just looked at where players were thought to go. We will definitely get someone with a lot of talent no matter where we are picking though.
