He just needs to figure out how to track a fly ball like an average MLB outfielder. He's going to be a good offensive player.
I'd like to see him track a fly ball like an average high schooler at this point. For as good of an athlete he is, it's hard to believe how bad of a fielder he is.
I'm not convinced that he's going to be a "good offensive player" either. I have more of a feeling that he's going to be a bust of a prospect that they should have traded 2 years ago.
He's already 24, hasn't become a good MLB hitter yet (average at best IMO) and is a terrible fielder. We've had a hole at LF for two years, and RF for a year (til Pence) that gave him the opportunity to snatch it, and he's continued to fail. One thing I don't like about the Phils is how long they take to give their prospects a chance. Howard was 26 when he started at 1B, Utley was 26 as well when he finally got 2B to himself, and now by their early 30s, they're past their prime.

He only had 200 plate appearances last year, and had a near 400 OBP for over half of those. He's had a .390 OBP in AA and in AAA. Give him playing time and he'll be a good offensive player. He really has not been given the opportunity snatch anything because he's been yanked around. We also did not have a whole in LF in the managers eyes.
I have to believe he'll get better at LF. If he really can't I'll be baffled. Even if he doesn't have any instincts he has speed to make up for it like Victorino.

Halladay, Lee, Worley will open season in Pittsburgh. Hamels to start home opener.
Dubee explained. “Cole has had more experience,” said Dubee, asked why Hamels gets the home opener. “Hell, he’s pitched in the World Series. The big flag is out there. Not that Vance can’t handle it, but it’s a little bit of a hectic day. Any of our guys deserve to pitch the home opener or the opener of the season. This way it lines up where Cole gets it. It splits our lefties. It doesn’t put Vance in that situation. Cole is more accustomed to pitching with a lot of hoopla around.”
This team is going to be all pitch no hit this year.
Worked for the Giants 2 seasons ago, didn't it? Of the teams that made the playoffs that season, the Giants scored the least runs in the regular season and allowed the fewest.

They also scored the 2nd most runs per game in the playoffs if I remember correctly. You need to hit to be able to win a championship.
Our offense was also very good last year for the majority of the season, but we had a bunch of bad AB's, bad bounces, bad calls, and generally bad luck.
We still need to either get our hitters to focus on just having the right type of AB, or find some other hitters that can. Amaro was right when he said what he did after the year ended. He was either too handcuffed to follow through, or just wrong to back down from that plan.
The little bit that I've seen of him so far, I hope Montenez gets a shot this year, if not as a MLBer out of camp, at least a call-up. He's got a cannon in the OF, and I've seen some solid ABs so far too.
Posted this in OT thread but I figured it could go here too. Question for some people...
So I just got an unused ticket to opening day at the Vet in 1971 from Gradnfather who went to the game with my dad and my uncle. I went to the final game at the Vet and the first game CBP. I want to get some kind of frame-job done but I can't decide what. I was thinking a picture of the Vet with both tickets in there, or a picture of the Vet with a picture of CBP and all three tickets in there. Or potentially just waiting until the blow up CBP and going to the last game there. Haha. Anyone else have any creative ideas?
EDIT: Also, does anyone know where to get a good photo of the Vet (autographed by HK or Phillies of that era, if possible)? I can't find any good ones on ebay or just Googling it.
Perhaps if you contact the Philly Inquirer they could help you out with the photo. I'm sure they've got a bunch laying around, but I don't know if they sell prints or not.
