Biggest Olympic Disappointment?

What in your opinion has been the biggest individual/team disappointment in Athens?

obviously, itd be the mens basketball team...but i mean, its only the olympics...people are making it seem like the nba is a semi pro league at best, but quite frankly, i think this is just a case of guys not coming together as a team

I'm disappointed in how the US basketball team was selected and how they played.

I'd say the US Womens 4x100 relay team has to be more disappointing after failing to make a good baton pass; that was more shocking to me than the US Mens basketball team ultimately not getting the gold. The girls didn't even medal after running a faster time in the preliminaries than the winning Jamaican team ran in the final. At least Marion Jones and Lauryn Williams gave a classy interview blaming no one after the fact. I really wanted Williams to get a gold, she will be back with a vengeance in Beijing.

The US womens volleyball team not even getting to the semifinals, costing themselves a shot at a medal and myself more time to watch Logan Tom.

Mardy Fish's choke in the mens tennis final against that incredible guy from Chile, Massu(?).

How about Asafa Powell? He was really hyped in the press before the Olympics started and didn't even medal in the 100m or 200m. Jamaica also didn't even qualify for the finals of the mens 4x100 relay, costing Powell a chance at silver or bronze and redemption.

Ian Crocker's horrible swim on the opening leg of the mens 4x100 relay cost Michael Phelps and the rest of the team any chance at the gold. A normal swim from Crocker would have kept South Africa close and given Phelps a decent shot at 7 gold medals.

Japan's baseball "dream team" not even getting to the gold medal game.

Perdita Felicien falling on the first hurdle of the womens 110m final and knocking out the Russian(?) girl next to her.

The Dutch Women's Field Hockey Team, from the way I understand it, they were the overwhelming favorite over Germany and Choked badly...women's field hockey = yum

To have that kind of lineup be shut out against teh AUSSIES is ridiculous.

The flak they're getting at home is just insane at the moment.

Jani Sievinen's "tactical swimming"...

Oh feck it, just throw in the whole Finnish Olympic squad except for Marko Yli-Hannuksela and Marko Kemppainen.

Finland, the 11th best nation in the history of the Olympic games before Athens 2004, failing to get a single gold medal.

For Canada

Nicholas Gill- Silver medalist from Sydney, eliminated in first round of Judo

Emile Heymans- Had a medal wrapped up at the last dive, but she blew it and choked

Perdita Felicien- Sho should have won the gold, but damn those hurdles!

Women's 4x100 meters.

Having run track competitively, that exchange was Bush league. It violated the number one rule of relay, get the stick to the next guy at all costs. If they were just careful, they had the speed to win through an awkward transfer.

The Dutch Baseball team.

Perdita Felician. (If she lost the race thats one thing, and if she triped over a hurdle that would suck too, but it was the FIRST FREAKING HURDLE!! )

Not the biggest dissapointment, but the fact that Serbia & Montenegro didn't get to the semifinals is almost as shocking as the Americans not playing for the Gold Medal (well, in Southern Europe it is)

Agreed...they were smoking in the prelims.

- The US Basketball debacle....just like the boxing program, the powers that be have to overhaul the training and philosophy concepts....alas, as long as ESPN rules, it'll not happen. Flash always goes over substance in the Atention deficit country of ours...

- No medals in diving....even as good as the US was in some cases, some of the Chinese and Aussies were amazing.

- Rulon Gardner---this guy is great, it's an achievement at what he did and the feel god story would've been him getting the gold.

As far as Hamm goes, why does he get punished for something he didn't do? The officials screwed up. Lord how I hate subjective judging.....the Japanese men got screwed in that competition.

Him falling "on the judges" doesnt make it any worse than someone who falls off the other side.

I'd say for Canada, it was a team effort. Sure we had some surprise medals, but a lot of our medal favourites flopped/choked. This was probably the most disappointing olympics in Canadian history.

Poland...

swimming: 2x 4th
judo: 5th (the guy lost to an ukrainian at the last second of his semi-final fight)
canoe/kayak: 2x 4th, 1x 5th, one medal contender DSQ, 6 finals only 1 medal
mistral: 5th (world champion)
rowing: many medal contenders, only one gold
hammer throw: ex olympic champs, (W) 5th, (M) DNQ
weightlifting: half the team didn't go (doping) these guys were favorites in their categories
boxing and wrestling: very bad performances from medal contenders

Worst Olympic performance since 1956 for Poland

When the officials or whoever was in charge agreed to review the tape, *against the rules I might add*, it was shown that the Korean should have actually been deducted two tenths of a point in his routine for several stalls. So basically, even if the start value was handled correctly, the man should not have even MEDALED, much less recieve a gold medal. If your going to review a tape, review the whole thing. I read a good analagy in the paper the other day - In football, if a play on the field is challenged, the officials are not going to rule a man actually scored a touchdown if he stepped out of bounds on the three yard line. This is what happened here......the people in charge are trying to shift the blame to Paul Hamm's shoulders when the whole mess was due to their double incompetency. This is why appeals have to be made at the time NOT after the event, and on top of that, this is why the governing body should not try and guilt trip the true winner of the competition due to their own inabilities to govern the sport/bad judging.

Perdita Felicien comes to mind, such a heartbreaking moment to see her fall down at the first hurdle.

Canada's 8-men rowing were : defending world champions, huge favorites coming into these games, finished 5th.

USA and Lithuania men's basketball : Both were big favorites, expected to meet in the gold medal game, ended up in the bronze medal game.

Canada's swimming team : Just a dissapointment that no canadian swimmers were expected to win a medal.

US men basketball

Marion Balco.. err Jones (no doping no medals eh?)

The chinese duo and the russian duo in the syncro diving three meters, one chinese lost his dive and fall on his back: they get a vote of 0 and fall from first to last (it was so damn funny that mistake )
Right after that Dimitry Sautin of Russia with his last dive hit the trampoline with his feet and completely mistake the dive: they get around 4, so no gold for them too.
