Not a chance seems like an awfully strong assertion considering the work Shero has done with other players that could've commanded more money (e.g. every big name on our team - Sid, Geno, Fleury, Orpik, Letang, Michalek, now Kunitz). Only Martin's and Staal's contract are borderline but even then not outrageous by any stretch. I think there's a very good chance. You're drawing a line in the sand over $500K cap hit difference and saying it's not possible. Seems a little pessimistic.

Now, if Neal goes out and scores 35-40G and 30+ A, yes... the number will probably be higher than $4M (depending on the length of the deal which obviously has a big impact]. But I doubt the numbers you posted put him beyond the cap number I posted.

Great signing! And he took the same cap hit like I was wondering. I was almost certain he won't take over $4 million cap hit and he didn't. Good guy this Chris Kunitz is. Yes man.

I'll say Kudos for sure the Shero.

But I'm going to give the whole pens organization a pat on the back here. I'm sure other GM's are shrewd negotiators. The fact the players seem willing to sign as part of "the plan" really says alot about their experience playing here.

I think alot of credit can go to Bylsma and the staff. This system and the respect he gets for his hard work here is a perfect fit for the Kun. (Not to say he doesn't have the skill to play well for any team).

In regards to Neal. I hope he plays with Sid or Geno and the team and himself thrive. I think he will be a fan favorite here, and he seems to have great attitude towards being a pro. (love the funny in camera looks during the anthem). Goals and hits always help with the fans too.

If he scores 30 this year and plays to this effort level (or 95%) i would extend him at 4.25 4 yrs. With Kunitz and Kennedy locked up, i like that core for a top 6 group for the next 3+ years (Sid, Geno, Kunitz, Kennedy, Neal).

I think ray had the upper hand in the negotiations. Kunitz hasn't really been tearing it up dating back to April. 2 goals in his last 18 games and he was absolutely worthless in the playoffs. I know crosby didn't play, but he was still paired with Tk and staal. I think he is worth about $3.5 mil, so it was not a.bad deal. But it certainly wasn't a steal...let's see if he can play in 65 + games.

Yeah I agree, far from a steal. I think they paid for his best output, but he's been inconsistent.

Awesome. Kunitz has hit his prime late in his career and is one of the most important pieces in the system after the big 5.

Seeing as he's making the same amount and the cap countiues to rise, it's like he's taking a discount because his percentage is lower.

This is a great deal! People complaining should recognize he would have received much more on the open market. Short term is a plus. The injury situation is really the only negative in my opinion, but they happen. Kunitz is a warrior and an asset. Let him hit the market, or sign him at a great price and short term? People need some perspective.

For a 20ish goal, 50 point guy? He wouldn't have gotten much more than that.

He would have gotten more. Did you see what guys like Leino and Fleishmann got this off-season?

I was hoping he would take a discount but anytime you lock up a player like him it is a good thing. He fits Bylsma's style to a T. I just hope his body holds up for three years.

As I said in the Kunitz thread...anything starting with a 3, you have to re-sign him. Really good number.

I don't believe that people think he wouldn't have gotten more than this on the open market. A guy who scores 20ish goals, 50-60 points, crashes the net, hits, goes to the corners, and is solid defensively. Not even to mention a first liner on two Cup winners. And that guy doesnt get 4.25M a year on the open market? Look what Erik Cole just got.

I actually think I'm being rather realistic considering how bad cap inflation is these days, and what players like Neal are actually demanding on the market. Also, if someone like Eric Cole, who's 10 years OLDER than Neal can squeeze over 5 million out of the Habs, then it's not at all crazy to think that Neal can demand around the same amount. Not everyone is quite as humble as Kunitz

Also, guys who score 35-40 goals and 70 points a season typically demand much more than between 4-5 million per season (see Kessel for example).

Max Talbot got 1.8 per from a cup contender no less, soooo I think people seriously underestimate the value of some of our players. I am happy to have the Kun back for two years and hopefully we can just replace him with the Kuhn. Haha I made a funny...

People think this is an overpay? Really?

The signing of Shero is right up there behind drafting Crosby and Malkin and the Pens staying in Pittsburgh as the best things to happen to this team in the last decade. Proved it once again with this signing.
