We knew this team would be a work in progess, but I had hoped to be able to see some things that were working. So far I'm not seeing anything to inspire hope.
I'm not bailing on this team no matter what. I will support them financially and emotionally no matter how bad they are, but I need some help to see what we've got to build on. Those of you with better hockey minds than I, please help me find the bright spots.
They've shown bursts of great puck control in the offensive end (aka "time on attack"). Unfortunately we're not reaping the rewards of this because of trying to force it to the slot while there are tons of opposing team players there / poor shot selection.
For today's game, my positive is that Scheif looked much, much more comfortable out there. He was right up in the mix on many occasions, and his increased ice-time versus last game reflects that.
I still agree with almost everyone that he should and will be sent back to Barrie for the year -- but it was a big positive for me to see him visibly improve in this game versus last. If he kept fading, I would have understood -- but lots of folks are pulling for this kid, myself included, and I'm thrilled to see him making clear strides and adjustments to the NHL in only a week.
Overall, this is going to be a season of patience, for sure. But I still rather love this team based on the intangibles (I'm a squishy compared to many people here, I'm fine with that) and I believe (perhaps foolishly) that they will click sooner or later. I have hopes for how they develop in future seasons, with some of the players we will have getting ready in the pipeline.
That's my positive, I guess. I had, and have, very low expectations of this team this year, so I'm just enjoying watching some of my faves show flashes of what they will be sooner or later.
