Head coach Paul MacLean was also impressed with Filatov's camp.

"I think Nikita's come in and worked real hard and been good with the puck, and he's been diligent without the puck," said MacLean.

"I believe he had around 13 shots on goal, which was first, second, or third on the team, so at least he was shooting the puck.

"The puck didn't go in the net for him, but I remember at least three plays that he made that ended up in goals for us, and they were big goals."

Judging by the reaction here, he must be the first 21 year old prospect in the entire history of the NHL to ever get sent down to the AHL.

Did the Leafs also "give up" on Joe Colborne when they sent him down?

I agree. He's got a lot of talent, but he's got to make the leap from promise to product. If we didn't have KK down there I'd be more discouraged.

Wow, what the hell? I was shocked he was scratched, this blows my mind. He was not playing badly enough to warrant this IMO.

They gave him the whole training camp, preseason and 2 games and he was seriously outplayed by dacosta. Butler has already shown what he can do last year with spezza. Filatov hasn't shown he has that ability and has looked indecisive, weak and a serious lack of confidence. There is nothing wrong with going to bingo. He's only 21 and this will be best for him long term.

It probably went something like this:

BM: Filatov, you haven't been playing too well, and I think you'll have a better shot at working on your game, in the top line down in Bingo, so don't take it personally when I send you down for 10 games or so.
Filatov: Damnit, ok.

or

BM: Filatov, you're the only waiver exempt, two way contract player we have right now, and we have too many, so don't take it too hard while i send you down to get top line minutes while i try and get rid of a contract or two.
Filatov: Damnit, ok.

Is Colborne a threat to bolt to the KHL?

Trading a 3rd rounder and then giving him 2 games to prove himself is beyond stupid. Murray is such a brutal GM.

He'll be back. All we have to do now is deal with the horrid speculation and mocking of fans from... everywhere.

Just a thought:

You know, Binghamton plays 3 games in a row this weekend... this could be nothing more than:
"Nikita, you're going to be scratched for the next game, and we'd rather see you get some games in rather than sitting around the arena. We're just going to send you down to play a game or two over the weekend, and you'll be back up here in Ottawa for Monday's game"...

This sort of thing isn't completely uncommon with players on 2-way contracts.

Maclean factors into that more than Murray.

Had he spent 2 years in the ohl with Sudbury he'd likely be a much more effective NHL'er and would not be going to ride the bus in the A right now.

Can't disagree with this. The Filatov experiement is now on life support. KK is our only hope. Let's hope he knows CPR.

Don't like this move at all. He deserves a shot over Butler.

He is 21. This will be very GOOD for him.

I think it's mostly about confidence. They want to see him to go Bingo can score some goals. That looked like his biggest problem when he was playing. He looked like he lacked confidence to shoot the puck, and for a goal scorer that's poisonous.

If he go's down and say scores 5 goals in 10 games I bet you see him back up.

I don't get why people are saying he is 21.

He already have 1 foot in the KHL door anyways. The only thing keeping him from bolting to Russia was a promise made by Ottawa to give him a shot. If anything he is going to feel lied to and betrayed.

Another mid round pick flushed by Murrdog.

Not that I disagree with it. In fact, I think it'll do him some good... he wasn't playing poorly, but to go to Bingo and play top line minutes rather than playing 4th line NHL minutes might be better for him in the long run.
I think it is crucial that Murray/MacLean communicate positively to Filatov on this move. Hopefully they explained to him that this move is based on the current NHL roster and not his play/abilities. He will be given top line minutes (I hope) in the AHL and should be one of the first 'top line' call-up once bodies are moved or injuries occur (assuming he reports to the AHL and performs well).

I guess we will have to wait and see how this plays out...
