When did he say that? Because if he said that on draft day you'd have to say he was right, he had a mediocre rookie season, and a terrible first half.

Yeah people dont realize that Stamkos has 19 pts in has last 20 games his rookie year. If it wasnt for that run then heads would have definitely been turning as to if hes any good.

Also why are people making such a big deal of this? We all know never to take these analyst' sereiously. But to be honest whats wrong in saying hes been the best player in the NHL after week 1? It obviously wont last but his week one was good enough to say hes the player of the week.

he may not be the best player but I def think he is underrated, one of the best D-men last year and he's had a great start to this year

Without Melrose, Stamkos immediately started doing better. He had 7 points in the first 9 games with their new coach. Melrose said all of this after he was fired..not on draft day. As soon as Stamkos got more time on the ice, his offense picked up.

How many guys can put up points consistently when you get 11 minutes a game?

Uh, no. He's not even a top five defenseman in the league, let alone better than his superstar teammate and best player in the game, Sidney Crosby.

As of right now, yes he is. And where exactly did I say he was better than Crosby?

As of the last four games? I can't judge a player based on such a ridiculously small sample size.

Even as good as he was last year, I have a hard time seeing him as being better than Weber, Chara, Lidstrom, Suter, Doughty, Keith, Yandle, Pronger, etc.

And, unless I directly quote you, I'm not responding to you. It's Melrose's comments that are worthy.

Yes, you can. A larger sample size would be ideal when determining consistency, an issue with Letang from last season. However, he has been a Top-5 dman during the first handful of games.

He should be fired. Now.

Half the people on this board could do a better job than he does

Yesterday, John Tavares was the best player in the league. The day before that, it was Claude Giroux (which, funny enough, spurred on a "Top 5 player in the NHL" thread). Earlier this week, it was... Phil "the thrill" Kessel. Last year, no one, not even Sidney Crosby, could catch Anze Kopitar and Dustin Penner at the top of the league's scoring charts... only a few weeks into the season.

Let's wait. Maybe this is the year he finally finishes in the top three of Norris candidates but... let's wait and see. He's just not there yet.

Letang has never won a Norris and only has two first place votes in his entire NHL career. I'm not sure how five really good games changes that.

Pretty much. Even though he isn't half the coach Boucher is, I still give a lot of credit to Tocchet for actually working with Stamkos after the fact.

I personally don't know why anyone would bother to listen to Melrose.

Great, you're looking at individual players on isolated games. I'm look at Letang over a four game span. Talk about sample size...

4 games is not a significantly greater sample size. I'm a big fan of Letang, but you don't get named a top 5 defenseman based on a couple of games.

While I agree Melrose is crazy, the idea of listening to a majority of HF posters is probably worse.

Have you actually seen every game of every team to be able to make that statement?
