Didn't some Native American group more or less build the Penguins new home because they wanted a casino also? Did I make that up in my mind?
no, you didnt make that up.
they ( i cant remember which tribe ) were going to build it if they got permits for slot machines. i dont think it was a full fledged casino though, just a big slots parlor. but they didnt get the permits and backed out. mario cried and there was talk of moving and the city ( or state, im not positive which one ) came up with the money. pretty much like any story involving the penguins, the words "mario cried" find their way into it.
When you compare the submission from Brookhaven/Islip for the same dollars the Nassau submission seems pretty slip shod and nowhere near as concrete or shovel ready as the airport plan.
Note the Position of the NEW building and the light rail line that they want snaking around it..
Nope. Not Light Rail, but shuttle buses from the Mineola LIRR.
From the 32 page develpment description embedded in the Newsday article:

6.1 Intermodal Garage Structure and Transit Enhancements
The financing required for a 6,000-space structured parking garage is approximately$150,000,000 based on an estimated cost of $25,000 per parking space.Shuttle bus service to the Mineola Long Island Rail Road station, with high-quality transit stops(seating, shelter, lighting, real-time projected bus arrival data) is estimated to have a capital costof approximately $3,000,000 and an annual operating cost of $1,500,000.

Native Americans were not involved in the financing of the Consol Energy Center. The state legislature approved and the state gaming board granted slots licenses to out-of-state (non-Native American) casino operators which pledged a portion of their revenues to fund a new arena for the Pens.
There were 3 bids - one, Isle of Capri, which was strongly supported by the Penguins, had solid committed funding plans for the arena in their bid. The state gaming board instead granted the slots licenses to Majestic Star - whose commitment to fund an arena in their bid was much less clear. It took lengthy negotiations with the mayor and Gov Rendell to finally solidify a commitment from Majestic Star to fund a new arena - $7.5M/yr over 30 years.
Overhead views of the current NVMC site, the planned development, and the adjacent Mitchell Field area (where the plan also envisions an exposition center, track and field venue, and a minor league ballpark for the LI Ducks.
The Coliseum is envisioned as seating only 16-17.5K (which likely means only 16K for hockey), and the transit improvements are just shuttle busses - not light rail of an LIRR extension.

Redevelopment of the County property is anticipated to include the following elements:
Mixed-use development program resulting in significant short-term and long-term job creation. The mixed-use development would include up to 5.4 million square feet of development consisting of sports and entertainment venues, residential, office, hotel and retail uses. A major focus of the office use would be a Bioscience/Hi-Tech Innovation Center
New Nassau Coliseum (±16,000-17,500 seats depending on the activity)
New multi-purpose Exposition Center for indoor sports, trade shows, large gatherings, etc.
New multipurpose track and field facility/exhibition hall
New minor league baseball stadium (subject of a separate grant application by the Long Island Ducks)
Public park space and streetscape improvements
Transit access with new intermodal stations and connection to the Long Island Rail Road in Carle Place or Mineola
New multi-purpose parking structure to maximize land area available for private development opportunities while maintaining green space. The complementary time
frames of the uses (office use during the day, sports and entertainment use during evenings and weekends) allows for efficient shared use of the facility
If this is the best they can do - a new small Coliseum squeezed into a corner of the development with a humongous parking garage - I think it's Belmont Plan-B or bye-bye Islanders (as far as Nassau is concerned). I can't see Nassau with it's high costs attracting that kind of R & D investment from the private sector (either real estate developers or biotech companies).
Does anybody think part of the issue may be the current state of the economy? I've got to think that has to come into the picture to some extent. How much, I couldn't say, but if the economy is like this in the forseeable future, it can't be good news for the Islanders.
Getting a bit off the subject, kdb209 I like your avatar. Would love the Islanders 3rd jersey to have paid some tribute to Long Island's first pro hockey team.

The economy is always a factor, but did you realize that EVERY OTHER NYC AREA TEAM HAS GOTTEN A NEW STADIUM/ARENA IN THE LAST 5 YEARS!?!?
No financial issue cannot be solved with competent people and visionary thinking. The problem is that between Wang, Mangano, Murray, and most of the rest of Nassau politicians, we're dealing with the exact opposite. Honestly forget politics for a second and you realize how minor league Ed Mangano is as a human being. Murray has half a brain, but is playing textbook politics across the board. Wang has been a non-negotiating madman in his decade as Islanders owner and hasn't exactly won any friends in politics much less the fans of the very team he's trying to keep in Nassau.
The more dig the more you realize that politics and downright ineptitude are the primary reasons we don't have a new arena deal in place - Not the economy.

I agree with alot of your points. In regards to the new arenas and stadiums in the NY area, it's my understanding that they were privately funded be it the Yankees, Mets or Metlife Stadium. The renovations at the Garden are being paid for by the Dolans (and ultimately the Knicks and Rangers fans). The city or state in some cases did agree to pay for some of the infrustructure costs.
It just seems to me, the current economic state makes it difficult to get any public financing for a new stadium or arena. The first thing voters scream, is how that money can be used to hire teachers or police officers.

Not to mention the NIMBY crowd shot down the private funded plan.

As a kid the first live hockey games I got to see were at the old barn in Commack.

John Brophy's Long Island Ducks!!!!
I remember Syosett Sports sponsored puck night ant the old Long Island Arena. Well sure enough an opposing player got a clean break away. Sure enough as he crossed the blue line pucks came reigning down all over the ice. He had to fall to the ice and curl up to keep from getting killed. Classic!
Way back during my High School Hockey days the Arena was the venue. As high school hockey was a club and not officially affiliated with the school system and the drinking age was 18 at the time and we played on weekday nights we would really pack them in. Football had nothing on us. Funny I just saw an article in Newsday on NHL players from Long Island. Saw an old nemesis Valmore James (Happauge High/ Buffolo Sabres) one hell of a shot from that guy.
One last remembrance from the Long Island Arena. "LADIES AND GENTLEMEN PLEASE WELCOME FOGHAT!!!

Same here. I grew up in Commack and we used to go the Long Island Arena to catch Ducks games and the Clyde Beatty Circus. I was very young then so my memories aren't all that clear. I do remember the Ducks had a tough guy named John Brophy (I think he later coached th Maple Leafs).
There also was a goaltender on one of the other teams and I think the story was that he never cleaned his uniform. I remember when the Ducks played against him, the fans would chant, "Dirty Normannnn". I was so young at the time, so some of my facts may be off a bit.

Part of Frampton Comes Alive was recorded at the Long Island Arena. Sadly if you go there now, there's a Target and a Sports Authority.
This is just too hard a thread to read. I just want to focus on the season, but the fact remains I can't just do that because this is an issue that needs to be dealt with now. Kate Murray holds the most responsibility for the Islanders not getting a new home, followed by Jay Jacobs. All the politics have gotten in the way and it just seems hopeless at this point. If the Islanders leave Nassau County I will probably laugh due to the fact of all the money the county will lose from them. They had so many chances to make this happen and they keep failing. I hope the Islanders don't leave Nassau because I want to live here when I'm older, but if the Islanders leave taxes will go up even more and I won't be able to afford it. For now all I can do is hold my breathe and step up to help the team when something is put in place like last time. While waiting for that time to come I'm gonna enjoy the season because who knows how many we have left on long island.
The first time around was a big issue with population increase and infrastructure cost. A large amount of new family units necessitates new school construction, new road improvements and money spent which the County didn't have (and taxes would go up bigtime).
The second time around saw a question of new taxation if Wang didn't meet his targets.
This one is ridiculous.
The ABLI proposal is the winner and has no chance because the County is inept and run by morons.
This might be doomed now - the County coming with this just spells out their complete disregard for the team and arena being here. I wonder if some of them were angry the arena would get this much room on the plot?
If we had another owner with this deal who had money, we'd have someone willing to, as Periferal points out, kick in some money in return for the awesome deal Wang currently has. That said, the County would probably prohibit that as that would be progress.

The solution? VOTE EVERYONE OUT.
This, but it won't happen. The only person that will get voted out is Mangano and that's it. Not to derail the thread but since we are talking about Nassau is it me or is the unions that Mangano speaking to complete morons? The county is a fiscal disaster, cuts need to be made and I would think what Mangano is offering in the way of cuts and having to pay in more is a lot better than holding your ground and suffering massive layoffs.
Back to the coliseum it's really not going to happen in Nassau, the financial issues that are going on with that county truly are beyond repair and I highly doubt anything gets built at the coliseum spot in any capacity. When 2015 comes the Isles will be in Queens or Suffolk and Nassau will be left with a building that is falling apart and no prospects because on the corruption and stupidity of these politicians/unions.
I am not going to even get into this. Just going to hope the team keeps doing what they have been doing, while adding a little more offensive from the 2-4th lines.

Here is a link about the old Long Island arena. Some great stuff. I love the Jack in the Box sponsered pucks. "Jacks" was often the last stop of a long night out.
