The Ghost of Tim Connolly

Good -

- Gerbe's hustle
- Myers on the third goal and some physical snarl
- Ward
- Gaustad laying open Gleason's mellon.
- GGK shifting momentum
- Stafford-Roy with some moments tonight -- the second goal was a great shot selection by Stafford leading to Roy's goal and Staff cleaned up the mess off Myers rush.
- Cody's response to the Allen hit
- Boyes looked like a player tonight

Bad -

- Have an odd-man rush against? Christ.
- Missed shots: 15
- Blocked shots against: 16
- Powerplay shot blanks
- Vanek's bad penalty that lead to the GWG against. Add in the bad plays on the SHG's earlier and he had a real bad night, despite the goal.
- Gragnani caught deep on two of the shorties. It will not surprise if he's sitting tomorrow.
- PK fails at the worst possible time
- Adam coasting on multiple backchecks including one that lead to a goal against. Hey Luke, your job is not that secure dude. And you're not enough of a star to coast on the backcheck all game. Move those leaden feet.

The Ugly -

- Two shorthanders against. I don't recall a team ever winning when down two. Reminds me of Connolly passing directly to the Bruins for two SHGA early last year.
- PP failed utterly
- Allen-Pominville. Allen took a run at and put Hecht out and he's still out from last year. Allen is still owed.

Defense is too focused on offense. Sit Grags or Sekera and get Weber in there to give some stay at home presence.

Repeating from GDT with a little added:

We don't need a new special teams coach. We need responsible ****ing point men. Gragnani was awful. His purpose IS to be the point man on the power play and he did more harm than good. The forwards are awful. Ehrhoff with the ***** at the end that caused the penalty.

While I'm pissed that we lost because it was the home opener, and doubly so because it was Carolina, I'm not panicking. This team won't give up 2 shorties a night for the balance of the season.

They just need to tighten the loose screws and reload the gun for the next game.

Exactly. Enough focus on jumping into the play. Let Webs get in there so we can at least have two pairs of defenseman with someone...um...responsible.

D was super aggressive at the point which caused trouble but bad back checking by the forwards as well. One more game like that by Adam and he could be riding back to Roch.

On the other hand it's early days and it's a learning experience with the new guys. They have to learn it can't always be attack attack attack...gotta play in your own zone too.

Which should be a coachable attribute. I'm not absolving the players at all because, man that was ugly. But having another coach there could help.

Good:
-I really liked Ennis-Leino-Boyes and Gerbe-Roy-Staff tonight.

-Leino in particular I thought played very well. He may play the ugliest finesse game that I've ever seen, but it's very effective.

-Miller made big saves at big moments.
-Ward was very good for Carolina.
-Although it was delayed, the response to the hit on Pommer. Those few guys came out firing. Gerbe, Goose, McCormick...gotta love 'em.
-Not the powerplay.

Bad:
-Players on both teams were fighting the puck all night long. The thing wouldn't sit down. When it did, it wouldn't move.

-I think I'm in the minority here when I say Ehrhoff shoots way too much. It's a cannon but on the powerplay I like high quality shots versus quantity.

-Special teams. PK gave up a huge goal at a crucial moment. PP was clearly awful. Team defense was horrible. Ennis trying to dipsy doodle when he was the only man on the blue line was just stupid.

-This may be one of the worst defensive efforts by a team that I've seen in a long time. Hopefully Lindy figures out what the hell happened.

-The powerplay

Ugly:
-The powerplay

Pretty much sums it up. Our defensemen actually need to play defense and stop pinching on EVERY chance. Myers had the clue tonight --- he seemed to know when to go and when not to.

On the PPs, we had TWO forwards on the points way, way too often --- especially with MAG and Hoff as the "Dmen".

Good:

- Cam Ward. Should be the first star.
- Roy was all over the place in the first.
- Stafford crashing the net.
- Ehrhoff getting shots through.
- Movement was good on the powerplay.

Bad:
- Ennis refusing to shoot in prime areas. All around bad game.
- Sekera holding onto the puck too much when he has it.
- Vanek with the weak attempt on the point keep-in, then taking the awful penalty.
- Adam not backchecking, leading to the third goal.
- Boyes just seems kind of useless. He doesn't really do anything at any time. Bring on Hecht.
- Too much finesse on the back end. Bring on Weber.

Ugly:
- Two short-handed goals, a pipe on another attempt and a breakaway. Seriously?

Good:

- Regehr looked rock solid tonight. Did all the little things right and led the team in hits tonight.
- Roy, scoring twice and for the most part good on the PK.
- Ehrhoff was pretty good and he actually shoots, unlike a majority of the team.
- Myers looked pretty good especially on that Stafford goal, although he did pinch and got caught back.
- Leino for the most part looked good, especially with puck control.
- Goose going after Allen.
- Pominville being alright after that hit.
- Miller kept us in without much help tonight. The Harrison goal was near-impossible to see and the rest of the team left him out to dry with the odd-man rushes and breakaways.

Bad:

- PP; we started the night well on it, making good passes and moving around their zone, but the odd-man rushes and breakaways were costly and inexcusable.
- Adam looked slow and didn't skate hard enough to catch his man on the Brent goal.
- Our defensemen didn't do a good job pinching tonight.
- Way too many shots being blocked and not getting through.

Ugly:

- Starting the year with a home loss, although we technically already played a "home" game before tonight.
- Allowing two shorties. We allowed 12 total last year.

Weirdly enough, MSG showed a graphic that the last two times we did that before tonight we won. Strange.

the good
- the PP when it wasn't giving up shorties. Good movement, great cycles. They took it inside when it was there, got shots from the point when the pk collapsed. It was beautiful... when it wasn't killing us
- Gerbmeister
- Vanek when he wasn't killing us with bad decisions on the PP
- Leino-Boyes with some solid possession time
- Goose doing the deed
- the PK until the end

the bad
- classic "same old sabres" type of game.
1. Soft floating seeing eye point shot that gets by Miller
2. Shortie against with seconds left in the period3
3. bone head late late late penalty downs comeback

the ugly
- Mike Weber should be playing

My mistake, Regehr and Gaustad led the team in hits with two each. I swear they said Regehr had five during one of the intermissions.

G

Other than the two shorties, I thought the Sabres played very well. Ward was good though.

Vanek, he's been amazing in every game this year, tonight was no exception.

B

Pomminville. He had a ton of high quality chances and failed. Glad he's okay though!

Gragnani. I don't know what the coaches see in him that puts him on the power play with Ehrhoff, over Myers. When you MUST score, it's Myers/Ehrhoff on those points. That should be automatic for anybody running that team AU-TO-MA-TIC. In fact, it should be Myers-Ehrhoff on that top PP whenever possible. Not just late in games. But ALWAYS late in games. I mean, Gragnani? He's barely a valid shooting threat, how's he gonna sell a shot better than Myers?

U

The two shorties. Neither one happens if it's Myers/Ehrhoff.

Traffic. Other than Vanek (absolutely awesome game except for a couple hiccups) and Staford, nobody wanted to drive the net and stay there. You have to drive the net, especially off the rush. Everybody looked like they wanted to be the shooter, but nobody wanted to get in there and grind it out in front! Excpet for the aforementioned.
