I was only making light of the Red Bulls 'sellout' because it said on their ticket site that it was a sellout when I tried to look for tickets there, and there were thousands of empty seats. I doubt there were that many no-shows for what was in essence a play-in game on a nice - if a little chilly - night, but I don't get why there were no tickets available there (wound up getting a nice deal on StubHub)

Speaking of the Red Bulls, I guess they're playing FC Dallas on Wednesday or Thursday. If they win, they match up with the Galaxy. That'd be a nice weekend game to go to (though the game'll probably wind up being Saturday night and I can't watch or attend then).

Manchester derby from today just started on Fox soccer channel. Watching that will be the perfect way of ending the weekend.

Red Bulls playoff Wednesday at 9 PM, the LA games in the next round would be Sunday (home) and next Thursday. I 'could' actually go to the Sunday game, especially with no Jets game to stress about - provided they win the wild card game Wednesday lol.

If they win, I'm doing everything possible to get to the home leg. It would be insane!

Dallas is a team that's stumbling into the playoffs. This is a favorable matchup for RB. Just gotta watch out for Shea and Chavez.

Man City > Man United.

The only team from Manchester is ****ing nasty.

Concerning the Red Bulls, if they beat Dallas, I'm absolutely going to find a way to attend the home leg against the Galaxy.

My "European-style" Major League Soccer that I outlined on the soccer board. What do you guys think?

As for the MLS Cup, they can set it up like the Carling Cup. All the teams in both divisions are in the tournament at the start of every season, playing MLS Cup matches in between "regular season" matches that count towards the standings. The US Open Cup and Canadian Championship would still exist as well, allowing for four major competitions that each MLS side may enter and the outside possibility for a club to win a quadruple of the Supporters' Shield, MLS Cup, US Open Cup/Canadian Championship, and the CONCACAF Champions League.

Let's say there were 26 teams...

First Division:
1. Champion (MLS Supporters' Shield) and automatic entry to CONCACAF Champions League group stage.
2. Automatic entry to CCL group stage.
3. Automatic entry to CCL qualifying round.
4. Possible entry to CCL qualifying round based on MLS Cup results. (MLS Cup winner is automatically in CCL qualifying round.)
5. Possible entry to CCL qualifying round based on US Open Cup and Canadian Championship results. (Both the US Open Cup and Canadian Championship winners are automatically in CCL qualifying round.)
6-10. Remains in the First Division next season.
11. Two-legged relegation playoff against eleventh-place Second Division club.
12-13. Relegation to Second Division.

Second Division:
1. Second Division Champion, promotion to First Division.
2. Promotion to First Division.
3. Two-legged relegation playoff against eleventh-place First Division club.
4-13. Remains in the Second Division next season.

That's my pipe dream for MLS, but sadly, it'll never happen since Don Garber wants to Americanize the league to ****.

I don't like it. The playoffs are the best part of sports. I don't care how they do it abroad.

They have playoffs in Europe. The FA Cup and Carling Cup are a year-long tournament (as well as pretty much every other domestic club tournament in Europe), e.g. "playoffs."

Not even close to the same thing. I like the champion of the league decided in the playoffs. How exciting would it be to know that LAG was the champion of the league two months ago because they were easily going to win the SS?

To me, the final four or five weeks of the Premier League season where the top clubs are fighting for points is exciting.

Although sometimes you do have a case in which the the Champion is far in the lead. (Which is why I don't like La Liga.)

Well I like the playoff system where a lower seed can win it all. Maybe I'm just a socialist lol. I like when the #8 seed goes on a run in hockey and I like the fact that NYRB can still win it all because they snuck into the playoffs and are getting hot at the right time. I don't want the league to be decided two months before it's over or only have two (maybe three) teams battle it out in the last month.

The problem is there is nothing wrong with either setup.

I love the normal promotion/relegation system and I love the NHLs playoff system.

Well they can't be treated any differently if it was split into two divisions of 12 or 13 from any other perspective except who they play.

I think as long as the Division 2 teams aren't treated as inferior franchise by receiving less $ and TV time, then it could work.

You would just have to include a 'League Cup' type thing where the lower division teams get to play, at home, the higher division teams.

Speaking of the League Cup, Newcastle plays at Blackburn tomorrow in Round 5 (Sweet 16)

Overseas you also have incentives for finishing in the top four (Champions league), and other postseason tournaments so it's not 'just' about whether the race for the league gets decided with a few games left.

I think ultimately you have to play to your audience though, so if Americans want playoffs to decide the league (which is the way it is in all our major sports) then that's what they should go with. You have to grow the sport here and not just appeal to the transplants.

I do like the relegation system they use over there, it gives the bottom several teams incentive to play on and not totally blow up their team. It's comical that while some of us want to Europeanize MLS, the American owners of British teams want to eliminate relegation over in England

I'll admit that there is a little bit of Eurosnob in me.

Don't get me wrong, I adore the Red Bulls and want nothing more than for MLS to grow and be successful, but when it comes to soccer, I think promotion and relegation is just part of the game and should be a part of every soccer league.

Playoffs are amazing for hockey, baseball, etc., but soccer, meh...

That's fine. I just hope that they don't pander to the Eurosnob market. Leave it alone.

If they beat Dallas, I'm getting my tickets with the supporters.

You should do the same, BC. Standing in the South Ward is so much ****ing fun.

I'm also going to try and sneak a red and white checkerboard flag in.
