This looks potentially serious. Very serious.

Doesn't look like its a broken neck since they walked him off but it still looks bad.

At least he's able to walk away. Doesn't look like he knows what planet he's on though.

Scary stuff - glad to see the lad get up and walk after that.

Very late and reckless hit by Rau.

How many concussions would that be for him if this is one?

Any besides the WJC?

The Gophers need some of the Wild's mountain mojo tonight.

So now even our PROSPECTS are concussion-prone?

No concussion, just a deep bone bruise.

You missed last night when I said Rau got five for Zucker being injured. Have a good split of Wild and Gopher followers which made things interesting. Been called biased toward the U, biased toward Zucker, an idiot...either way it's nice to have haters.

Look I don't really have dog in the Gopher v. Wild prospect fight. They're both guys I want to succeed. Rau's a physical player and makes big hits. He had something similar earlier in the year (a charge where he used his shoulder) that got called for roughing and laid out a CC player in an open ice hit. He's a player who finishes his check and I'm not surprised with his hit, nor am I surprised to see him get five for boarding; especially after Zucker laid motionless. It's the nature of the beast.

What I am surprised is that's the hit which the WCHA finally suspended someone with. Is it a late hit? Absolutely. Did he hit Zucker in the head? At best it's debatable.
Was it a check from behind? No. Would it have been dirty if Zucker popped back up? I can't say yes to that.

And when that ends up being suspended with the injury, with the fact it's on NBC Sports Net instead of just FSN or CBS Sports Net, I have a problem with the consistency the WCHA shows - it's Colin Campbell justice at its best. When hits like Kristo's on Marshall, Alt's on (can't remember the UND player but that same weekend) or even Basaraba on Mattson last night (see below) are just the 5 + game it goes back to consistency, the same issue any Wild fan had during our "PMB gets two but no player injuring a Minnesota player stretch" had.

If you recall the NHL rule 48 debacle last year, there was extremely specific language that addresses this point. It was blindside. Maybe it wasn't from behind, but the reason a hit from behind is dangerous has nothing to do with the fact that it comes from behind. It's dangerous because the receiving player can't see it coming through no fault of his own. Zucker never saw Rau coming, and that's 100% of the problem with hits from behind. This one didn't come from behind, but arguing it's any different than if it had is petty semantics that completely miss the intent and spirit of the description.

The bottom line is it's a dirty hit that has no place in the game. No one, not even Kyle's own mother, can defend that hit, and I can only hope that no one will try.

He got a 1 game suspension so he won't be playing.

Damnit, I think a better punishment would be to let him try to defend himself out there tonight.

I don't think the game being on NBCsports matters. I've seen hits targetting the head on channels like BTN not get suspensions. We'll see if they start getting more consistent on the suspensions.

you cant blame basaraba for that one, it wasnt super dirty. mattson was going to skate the puck up the ice, then he saw joe coming and turned away. mattson just got launched.

on another note, college hockey is getting a lot of splits this year. top teams losing more seems to be normal

Anyone have a better video of the Rau-Zucker hit? The only one I've seen didn't look as bad as everyone is saying.
