MONDAY:

Mississauga 4
Sudbury 3 (OT)
-Elliott NS, E, 5 PIM (Fight with 6'4, 214 Zach Stortini) [Elliott is 6'4, 225]
From an Ice-Dogs board:
Quote:
Elliott and Stortini went at it and Elliott got filled in, no doubt about it. The guy went down twice for a reason, Stortini can throw them. I don't care if anybody wants to argue that he maybe was off balance a bit. Stortini drilled him several times and got hit a lot less. I liked him waiting until Elliott got right back up before he started throwing them again. They even shook hands when it was over.

Elliott got beat bad, but I'd give him the nod in the peacock preening stage. His elbow pads went further. I was shocked Stortini took the helmet off. Can we Elliott's hand is fully healed, or was he trying to throw with his weaker hand?
TUESDAY:

Quebec 8
Rimouski 7 (OT)
-Hrdel 1G, 1A, -3
-Tobin 2G, -2
-Another Q goaltenders battle. Hrdel set up Tobin for his first goal. Tobin with the game tier with just over 5 minutes left. No Crosby. No goaltending, either.

Kelowna 5
Prince Albert 1
-Keller 2G (both on PP), E, 2nd Star

For anyone with a high-speed connection, you can watch QMJHL games every Friday night on this site: Eastlink TV Hockey schedule. That's the schedule of games (Atlantic time!), and you get to the feed by clicking "Web Casting" on the tabs at the top of the screen. The next two weeks feature PEI (hopefully we'll see Boutin in one of them), the week after that it's Rimouski.

I watched last week's game, and the quality of the stream is better than I got for the World Cup, no hiccups whatsoever. The broadcast is pretty professional, I don't know what I expected, but they have several cameras and intermission interviews with players, the whole 9 yards. Very enjoyable to watch, I highly recommend it if you're bored on a Friday night!

Yeah it was a good one! I hope Boutin is in next week, but Mior (whose name they pronounced about 10 different ways) was excellent tonight. My only complaint is I wish they'd show more replays, I like to see replays of penalties and good chances. But hey, at this point, beggars can't be choosers.

The Art Femenella update....

I finally got a chance to see this kid earlier tonight. Here are some (brief) observations about him:

He's a freakin' house! He looks like he could be a lineman for the Bucs (no kidding!). This guy is listed at 6'7'/255 lbs. and looks like it. You can't miss him.

Didn't do anything of note in tonight's game. He looks to be into the mold of checking forward. Although when he was utilized in the Catamounts' power play situations (which BTW isn't all that often), he would be the big guy screening the goaltender. He's a good, not great skater. He's also not much of a scorer either. Martin St. Louis doesn't have to worry about this kid breaking any of his UVM scoring stats anytime soon. Femenella is loves to use that large frame of his to check his opponents or simply send a "message". His puck skills are average, but he has a very long reach, which he uses quite effectively to take away passing lanes and in poke-checking situations.

If you want to read how he and his UVM teammates did tonight, please check out my Game Notes (10/16): BU vs. Vermont thread over on the NCAA boards.

I don't think The Mayor is rotating anymore. "Mayor" Greco is just too indispensible to CC.

No, he's not rotating anymore. That comment was past-tense... or I meant it like that. Atherton and Greco have both been in rotating systems with their respective schools in the past - similar to what we are now seeing with Rosehill. You are right... Greco won a consistent spot late last year and ran with it - especially in the WCHA playoffs with 2 PPG vs. eventual National Champion Denver.

Greco's a nice find.

I really like the future of our defense... while I still have worries about the skill factor on our farm at forward.

I think we should be drafting more Keller-like skill guys (not necessarily small), rather than the someone like Dusty Collins.

I respect that Jake liked his work ethic so much, but eventually you have to score goals and hard working guys like Collins are relatively easy to find in the late rounds. Collins could have been a late round guy.

Sunday:

Moncton 2
PEI 1
-Boutin DND

Mississauga 6
Saginaw 1
-Elliott 1A, +2, 10 PIM (FM vs. 6'3 208 Paul Bassonette: Apparently a draw. Elliott had an off-balance fall, but was the only one to land a shot... FM vs. 6'2 222 Thomas Harrison: Not much of a fight. Elliott hit Harrison with a clean check and while Elliott was undoing his chinstrap Harrison jumped him and they fell to the ice. Elliott was mad he was jumped and penalized 5 min. and slammed his helmet down in the penalty box.)
-Many fans were hoping for an Elliott vs. Bain match-up since the two were among the main pugilists for the Ice Dogs last year. Bain was traded away in the pre-season. Bain fought later in the game, just not Elliott.

Kelowna 4
Kootenay 3
-Keller 1A, E

Regina 4
Moose Jaw 3
-Zapletal 1A, +1 (Jan with first NA point)

As a small blast from the past...

These were the comments in the TIMES 2003 draft review on Hrdel:

ZBYNEK HRDEL

ROUND: 9. OVERALL: 286.

POS: C. AGE: 17.

HEIGHT/WEIGHT: 6-2; 194.

TEAM: Rimouski (QMJHL).

HOMETOWN: Pisek, Czech Republic.

SCOUTING REPORT:Had 10 goals, 14 assists and 131 penalty minutes in 65 games. Played for the Czech Republic at the World Under-18 Championships. Hard worker. Great competitor. Faltered significantly as the season progressed, but Goertzen said he is worth the pick.

GOERTZEN SAYS: "It's there. It's not totally out of left field. We think it's a pretty good gamble."

Also... regarding Tarnasky, he said: "A heart and soul guy. Sometimes those guys find a way."

According to Feaster, whether or not he signs is pretty much dependant on the CBA. He did tab him as a "hands guy" and that they were happy with the D and 3rd and 4th line guys, but they needed more hands guys. He mentioned Henrich as being one of those guys.

I should have something from Jake again soon. Hopefully.
