Overall I'm a bit dissapointed with "just" four gold medals because we could have had more. However, I think The Netherlands have done a fine job with a total of 22 medals.

Not that there's necessarily a relationship, but the USA has close to 10X as many people as Canada does. Not an excuse, certainly, as other countries with smaller populations can achieve greater success at the Olympics than Canada. But it's a factor to consider.

Still, it's pretty disappointing that a leading industrialized country with vast resources only produces 12 medals, even if we only have 30 million people.

*Cue comment about need for increased or more directed funding and coordination for amateur sport and coaching in Canada*

United States (USA).....35-39-29...103---Pop 293 million
Russia (RUS)..............27-27-38...92----Pop 143 million
China (CHN)...............32-17-14...63----Pop 1,298 million
Australia (AUS)...........17-16-16...49----Pop 19 million
Germany (GER)...........14-16-18...48----Pop 82 million
Japan (JPN) ...............16-9-12.....37----Pop 127 million
France (FRA)..............11-9-13....33----Pop 60 million
Italy (ITA).................10-11-11...32----Pop 58 million
South Korea (KOR).........9-12-9.....30----Pop 48 million
Great Britain (GBR).........9-9-12.....30----Pop 60 million

I find Australia's medal count the most remarkable of them all, look at their tiny population compared to the other top-10 nations in this Olympics. Must be the weather down there!

The US has 19x more citizens than for instance The Netherlands, who have 22 medals, so 103 medals is pure poverty. Besides, we're still waiting for all the results of the doping tests.

Not really when you consider Americans have no clue what half the events in the Olympics are (Team Handball?!?!?!) We dominate the events we're supposed to dominate (Swimming and Track & Field), do well in several other disciplines, and luck out in a few "niche" sports that .000004 % of the population knows about. I consider that pretty darn good. This whole population-results argument is bunk anyway. There are more important, and telling factors then that.

As if many other countries have a clue what half the events in the Olympics are. Swimming and Track & Field are by far the most popular sports at the Olympics, so you think it's a surprise they dominate these sports ? These sports simply get the most attention to do well in. If you think that that whole population argument is bulk then you're pretty naive because that's of course total nonsense.

I think that equating success with total population is a slippery slope. Countries like Australia do well despite having a relatively small population. Why? It's because they have a system in place, and sufficient resources and dedication to do well in the sports they know they can compete in. That's the formula for success IMO.

YES!!

Yes,because obviously the only way we could dominate the medal count was to go to Iraq. That's obviously the answer

And Population has nothing to do with.India and China have billions of people, but they didn't get the most medals.

Population doesn't mean squat, or at least it shouldn't, it's the quality of athletes.

The U.S. sent the most athletes to the games, now if you want a stat you could use that one.

The population arguement is stupid since there are limits on people the US can send. The US could probably send 20 100m sprinters tot he games, but I'm pretty sure 3 is all they are allowed to send, ditto on the 200.
