Apparently today was the unofficial 'Sign Your Prospects Day'.

Montreal Canadiens general manager Pierre Gauthier announced today the signing of defenseman Morgan Ellis to a three-year contract (2012-13 to 2014-15). As per club policy, financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
Ellis, 19, has 13 goals and 46 points in 54 games split between Cape Breton and Shawinigan of the QMJHL this season. He was a 4th round choice, 117th overall in 2010 by Montreal.
The Payerl signing puzzles me a bit. Don't mean to bad mouth the guy by any means but I just don't see a lot of pro potential there. Slightly above average sized, not a great skater, no standout offensive skills and doesn't play overly well physically or defensively. He's just an average OHLer who will wind up in the ECHL or maybe AHL imo, but prove me wrong kid.

Reminds me a lot of the Joey Haddad signing a few years ago...it doesn't make much sense to me either, he doesn't seem to have NHL potential, so why not have Wilkes-Barre/Scranton make the signing?
He'll probably end up spending more time in Wheeling than WBS...I hope he proves me wrong, but I don't really see this as anything more than depth grit for the minors...which I don't agree with spending a contract spot on.

Coyle, 19 (turns 20 tomorrow), was a first round pick, 28th overall, of the San Jose Sharks in 2010. He was a part of the Brent Burns trade last June when he became a member of the Minnesota Wild. He is currently playing with Saint John of the QMJHL.
I suspect the 20th birthday had something to do with the timing of the signing. I know that goes into the calculation for a couple things (such as waiver exemption). Does anyone know what all it affects?
Gauthier, 20, has 40 goals and 69 points in 56 games with Saint John of the QMJHL. Gauthier was never drafted.
Lightning really tappin into free agent CHL market. Yzerman must really hate his depth and most of the organizations prospects would be just signing their first contract when the new guys become RFA's thus creating space.
I'm more curious on where the Lightning will be five years from now then any other team, really need to step up and gain some depth and they could have a sustainable winner

When it comes to stuff like this...nothing. The contract doesn't kick in until next season.

I would argue that the Lightning have one of the most deepest forward pools in the whole league. Judging by what he has said in previous interviews he would agree with me. We have a really really deep forward pool, but if you have an option to make an area even stronger....not matter how good it is initially, then why wouldn't you do it?
Flyers have just signed Cal Heeter from Ohio state.
I have some mutual friends with Cal.. wish he hadn't signed with my least favorite team, but congrats to him and best of luck regardless. Rep the Buckeyes well, Cal!
The New York Islanders announced today that forward Mike Halmo has agreed to terms on an Entry Level Contract.
Halmo, 20, led the Owen Sound Attack and ranked fifth overall in Ontario Hockey League (OHL) scoring with 84 points (40 goals, 44 assists) this season. In his four-year OHL career with Owen Sound, the Waterloo, ON, native has 76 goals and 88 assists for 164 points. He served as captain during his fourth season.
Interesting that the day Halmo signed with the Isles, he also got mainstream press attention as last night he clobbered Nail Yakupov with a big open ice hit.

I take it he was already on NYI's radar. With a suspension looming that would have probably cut short the remainder of his OHL career, it makes sense to sign him now and have him report to the Tigers.
