You know, I haven't started worrying about this Markov situation until now...and i'm not worried about the condition of his knee either. He's obviously going to resume playing at some point in the near future, whether that's in 2 weeks or 2 months matters little to me.
But the situation of him flying to Florida and now staying there for another week (Renaud Lavoie has added that it's also for personal reasons) seems very strange to me.

Why should they bother, it's pretty obvious by the numerous posts in this thread that it wouldnt be enough anyway...

Not sure but if it's worse then they thought, Habs management would get blasted for the signing saying they didn't do any homework and just awarded Markov a contract. Not sure I'm just saying maybe it's a reason the Habs aren't saying anything
PG sweating bullets over this as the media has given him a free pass on the Markov signing, by-and-large. You can be sure he'll catch heat if it lingers into mid-November and there'll be real trouble if it goes longer than that.... rightly so.
PG is a rebel. Experience on D? meh... who needs it.... Halak is better than Price... screw that, Price is my guy. He is a confident guy and he makes his own decisions (often in the face of conventional wisdome). He is out on a limb with our d and I, for one, hope he is as right as he is confident.

Im not a doctor, but I've been around sports injuries especially knee injuries, and there can be a lot of minor issues, not a re-torn ACL or anything, just "glitches" and they told us about the swelling in the knee so you can imagine they would have drained it, then tested it, and re-tested it
Habs put a lot of faith and money in Markov, they are probably being exploring every ache or pain he might feel to make sure he doesn't re-injure it

This doesn't quite make sense. He should continue on the IR from last year, like with Crosby. I heard McGuire explaining that because Crosby was on it last year, and simply re-confirmed to it this season, the usual minimum time he had to be out etc. doesn't count. Maybe that's what happens when they do it retroactively. Regardless, it's hard to believe they'd have his salary counting against the cap when he's been out so long.
I'm sure the Habs would love to come out and say... Markov will play his first game against team X on November XX, 2011.
Unfortunately, it doesn't work that way. All they can talk in is generalities, not in exact dates of return, until its actually time to return.

It always counts against the cap, even when you are on IR. How LTIR works is that it allows you to go above the cap by (Amount of cap hit remaining for the year - amount you are already under the cap).
However you need to get back under the cap the moment Markov returns.
So this means that the space is really only good for callups, unless Markov is gone for the whole season. If he was gone for the whole season, we could use it like we did with Wiz last year, but as long as he's expected back, you can't use the space, because you'll have to move out the same cap space when he returns.

Me too, I'm not about to panic, but I will say that this at least peaks my curiosity.
Him spending a week in Florida is a good thing. Florida is such a beautiful sunny state. Being in such a place during an injury is great for your mental health. It'll help rejuvinate him getting away.
The sun is powerful, it can have positive affects on you. You guys need to think about the positives in situations instead of always looking for the negative. Dr Mulder isn't a knee specialist, having Dr Andrews check him out a few days apart will give him a much better prognosis and evalutation of where he's truly at.
The reason they aren't giving an exact timeframe or diagnosis is in my opinion because they aren't 100% sure themselves. It's better to say that things are going according to plan instead of providing the public a date and diagnosis only to face another setback and look incompetent.

Like I said...i'm not worried about his knee. It doesn't matter to me personally when he's back, whether that's 2 weeks from now, or 2 months, as long as he's back and his knee is 100% ready to go (which even then, doesn't guarantee any other future set back or re-injury).
But I find the trip to Florida and consequent stay there, very peculiar...i'm not going to start throwing out cover-up theories, but it's made me a bit curious, like you put it.
Either way, i just want to see the guy on the ice again...I love watching Markov play.

This, the only cap space benefit we will receive is from the point Markov is placed on LTIR and beyond. We get nothing up until that point.
LTIR can be backdated, the reason teams wait to put players on is I think they have to miss a minimum of like 24 days or 10 games.
(d) Bona-Fide Long-TermInjury/Illness Exception to the Upper Limit. In the event that a Player on a Club becomes unfit to play (i.e., is injured, ill or disabled and unable to perform his duties as a hockey Player) such that the Club's physician believes, in his or her opinion, that the Player, owing to either an injury or an illness, will be unfit to play for at least (i) twenty-four (24) calendar days and (ii) ten (10) NHL Regular Season games, and such Club desires to replace such Player, the Club may add an additional Player or Players to its Active Roster, and the replacement Player Salary and Bonuses of such additional Player(s) may increase the Club's Averaged Club Salary to an amount up to and exceeding the Upper Limit, solely as, and to the extent and for the duration, set forth below.
