Remember the Ducks and Sharks got off to horrendous starts last season

Also remember, Dallas has already played CBS twice.

Regulation/Overtime wins (ROW column) are worth more in the standings than Shootout wins (SO column)

I wouldn't worry. The Stars will be right back down to their usual perch at 9th or 10th place as soon as Kari gets tired or somebody gets injured.

lols ookay..next thing you know short handed goals or PP goals will count towards position in the standings, heck why not go with who traveled more miles in a season to determine standings

Either of these teams could make the playoffs.

As I see it, the teams in the west that are locks are:
Vancouver
SJ
LA
Detroit

Then I think Anaheim is likely to make it since they were 4th last year, and have Hiller back with an improved defense (Beauchemin for a full season, Fowler developing).

That leaves 3 spots to fight over, teams I think have a realistic shot being:
Chicago
St. Louis
Nashville
Dallas
Colorado

On paper I don't think Colorado should make it, but I don't think it's impossible. Chicago just barely scraped their way into the playoffs last year and haven't drastically upgraded their team. Nashville I don't think has improved and might possibly be slightly worse than last year. And any team could fall out of the running due to injuries the way Dallas and Colorado did last season. Take into account that Colorado plays in the weakest division of those teams listed above and they might have a shot.

Yupp, you've been living under a rock. The conversation goes back to more than just regulation wins being worth more than shootout wins now. It's more of a thank god they're worth more now, we're making the skills competition worth less.

I'm an Avs fan and this isn't really surprising me. I put this team at 7-9, possibly lower if injuries hit big time and I still think that's where we'll end up. Last year, we were winning only because of offense so when injuries hit and the depth didn't step up (because we had none) we plummeted. This year's early wins seem like more of a team effort and the system is more controlled rather than run and gun and hope to score on the odd man rush to make up for the turnover to goal on the next shift. Also, unlike last year, we have a goalie that can win a game on his own. So far, he hasn't had to be spectacular but he can be if the defense fails.
The team just looks totally different so I don't think we'll see the drastic drop in the standings like we saw last year. They'll fight for a playoff spot and if they miss out it won't be by much

ummm they count the same in points, so I guess you've been living under a rock too?

My point is, if the league takes a SO win as a win whether its regulation or OT, than why make it less on determining some other standing? Why stop there, why not make OT wins also count less? Or like I said, shorthanded goals count more on the +

Because the league felt that a shootout win should be worth less than a regulation or overtime win, but not enough to warrant a reduced amount of points, thus, they gave it the disadvantage in tie-breakers.

It's just one of the many Tie breakers....I don't understand why you have an issue grasping this. The SO, by and large, is a gimmick. Something to catch the attention and interest of the non-hockey fan.

changing of the guard. go avs go! greg sherman and our scouts did a good job in the rebuild, good drafting and what seem to be pretty bold trading that seemed to be to the avs advantage (for now). erik johnson will lead our defense for years to come and varlamov will be our best goalie since roy's departure, as anderson seems to be a flop in ottawa. turns out to be a good trade as well as he helped ottawa move up in the standings at the end of last year and elliot helped us get landeskog, who brings us much more than just points on the scoresheet. with a plethoria of young defenceman in our system, gaunce, elliott, barrie and seimens our defence is in good shape for years to come. go avs go!

Would be great to see some classic matchups like we saw in the 90s.

Too bad the Wings are moving to the east.

i seem to remember this type of talk last season especially with dallas and how they stormed out of the gate to take the lead in the pacific by like 20 some points by the end of december, can any one remind me how that ended up again?

Yeah I definitely had flashbacks looking at the WC standings this morning. Loved the Avs back in the day, was so-so on the Wings, and absolutely HATED the Stars.

Yep, because of Dallas's meltdown last year no one is going to take them seriously this year until the end when they show they can do it for 82 games. Kinda like how no one takes the Sharks seriously in the playoffs till they can get past the WCF, or Washington the 2nd round. Stars fans understand and are OK with that, since we're keeping the same cautious optimisim.
