The 6 points every 5 games thread

I have shared that in 1994 the Rangers coach and Messier had a system to break down the season into 5 game series, and try to get six points every 5 games. this would insure them 96 points and a playoff spot. The team would get a day off or a practice off every time this was achieved.

Some have thought it might be interesting to have a thread that follows this, as we dream of making the playoffs for the first time this century. We obviously succeeded with 6 points in our first five. This would be a good point to look at our next 5 and discuss the likelihood of achieving it, and then follow along accordingly.

that's pretty interesting way of looking at it...I think we can do it, but we must improve our 5 on 5 play and bring it every night..the Washington game was very disheartening

Agreed on the 5 on 5, but we will continue to gel. last night sucked, but i think we all new it would.

The bright side is our goaltending. Despite the weak first goal, Markstrom looked good, and Theodore as surprised the heck out of me. (i would trade clemmer).

Good idea. Would like to keep this going.

Im cautiously optimistic that we will defeat the Islanders and Senators. Would like to see them at least split with Buffalo and I have a feeling they are going to beat Montreal.

Great idea for a thread.

It would be interesting to keep a running tab after each five.

Buffalo is a very good team right now (4-1-0-0) so I am kinda doubting we beat them even once. Also the Isles are playing well too so I won't pencil that one in as easy pts. I think we have a better chance at beating the Canadiens in Montreal (they're struggling at home so far, winless).

if you plan to keep this going (its a good idea) then I would suggest adding some kind of record or stats associated w/ those opponents. It gives us all a better idea of how tough that competition is going to be to get those 5 pts.

Glad to see this thread up, thanks AG.

I think we can definitely get another 6pts here in the next 5 games. The big 'if' is how we play on the road trip. Beating Montreal in Montreal is no easy task, but it can be done.

Thu Oct 20, 2011 Sabres Panthers - Both Sabres games are going to be tough to win. We'd have to bring our A game for both. Being at home, I'll give them a slight edge here and say we maybe drag them into OT or a SO.

Sat Oct 22, 2011 Islanders Panthers - I think we could win this game. If we can contain their top line, we'd have another shot at beating them.

Mon Oct 24, 2011 Panthers Canadiens - This one is a toss up for me. I haven't followed Montreal much so far this year.

Thu Oct 27, 2011 Panthers Senators - This is one of those games you 'have' to win. Ottawa is just plain awful. If we can't beat 'em, we might as well join 'em at the bottom of the conference.

Sat Oct 29, 2011 Panthers Sabres - The Sabres are going to be tough to beat, and now that we're in Buffalo for this game, makes it harder to win. I don't like our chances on this one.

I'd say we could go - 2-1-2 OR 2-2-1. I see 5 or 6 points in this stretch, ideally.

Do we know when during this stretch we could have Santo back? Do we think by the Sens he'd be back?

First game against Sabres is very hard, but Buffalo isn't that good what we might see at points. There is some way to get 2 points for this game. Maybe lucky and maybe that as this is home game... OT or SO are at least possible. I guess we gonna see lot of goals in this game. Nice chance to get 2 points.

Saturday home game against Islanders must be win. Tavares and Islanders partners are nifty guys, but if Panthers defend disciplined so hard all away game, victory is near. The team who defend harder will win the game. Good chance to get 2 points.

Game in Montreal against Canadiens is hard. Maybe Panthers could win this, but i can't say yet anything. Canadiens will play against Penguins and Leafs before Panthers, so they had two hardly game behind. Harder than our Sabres and Islanders home games. Maybe 2 points.

Senators game we had to win, but so many times these "easier" games have flopped and Panthers have lost these games. Very good chances to win.

Second game against Sabres in two weeks. We know more after first @Sabres game, but still Panthers have changes, tough very sliced. I'm very pleased to get only 1 point for this game.

Summary: Even tough we would lose twice against Sabres, but win Islanders, Montreal ans Senators, we get 6 points. Only Islanders have good spirit and Canadiens is maybe hard to win their home place, but the team aren't so marvelous. And i trust we win Sens. . .

A humble suggestion. Change the thread title to "6 in 5 series #2", you'll need a new thread for every new 5 games or it will get really messy. So next 5 would be "6 in 5 series #3", or maybe some other creative name, but my point is we'll need a new thread for each set of 5 and it'd be nice to have them labeled for future reference.

Anyways, I'd expect this new team to be able to beat Ottawa for sure. The other 4 points I think we can pick up from the Canadiens and Sabres. I say Sabres because the next time we play the Isles they will be much better than round 1. I think we surprise the Sabres and take one of the games.

Having said that you watch them prove me a liar and lose to Ottawa but win both games against the Sabres.

The Buffalo games will make or break the 6 points. Last season we went 2-1-1 against them and the previous season 1-3-0, so over the past two we're a combined 3-4-1.

I was surprised when I dug up the results, I thought it favored Buffalo a lot more. Maybe I've just been at BAC to see every one of the home losses (and missed the W's), I don't remember beating up on Buffalo. They always make me nervous, kind of like Carolina. We "should" beat them but the matchups are never right.

The good news is that it's a completely new team that won't be bullied. I think we have a chance. I think we'll get 3 pts from Buffalo, 2 from Islanders, 2 from Montreal, and 0 from Ottawa. Total 7.

Sorry to be away so long, but since I had no basic knowledge of my new team I have been trying to catch up. Oh and taking pot shot tweets at the Jets fans as their heads explode. Yes still a tad bitter.

Anyway great thread! The big thing for our guys to remember is any team is beatable on any given night. The Isles are just as much a threat as the Sabres. And the Sens will get it together soon and I rather it not be against us. But the Sabres are going to be the tough hurdle. If we can make them play our game I say we at least get a point in each game.

I have been so impressed with our PK and play in general.

Welcome back Pantherbelle, don't be bitter. This is where you want to be now thanks to Tallon. You see our touchdown the other night? That's what we can do when we are on our game. Don't expect that everynight but I think we have enough talent to get to 96pts which IMO will be playoffs.

btw great idea adam graves! Would also like to add that the 6pts and 3wins in 5games came with 4 of the 5 on the road. We have only played one home game out of five games and have 3 wins. I think we couldn't have asked for a better start.

Interesting next five we have. I think we'll win one of the games against Buffalo and there's no excuse to lose to Ottawa. I think the Montreal and Islanders games could go either way. I'd be happy with 6 points, but I think we could earn anywhere from 4-8 points. Thankfully no games are on back-to-back nights.

1st 5 - @NYI (W), @PIT (L), TB (W), @TB(W), @ Was (L) - 6 points

THE NEXT 5

Thu Oct 20, 2011 Sabres Panthers

Sat Oct 22, 2011 Islanders Panthers

Mon Oct 24, 2011 Panthers Canadiens

Thu Oct 27, 2011 Panthers Senators

Sat Oct 29, 2011 Panthers Sabres

I am confident in beating the isles and senators; and thinking we'd beat the sabres at home giving us the next 6 points.

So, if this interests you the thread will be active; and if not it'll die a natural death.
Afraid thread wouldn't take off if you mentioned...HIS name? LOL

I don't expect it every night but if they play with that much intent. We will win games that folks don't think we should! Thank god for free center ice! I still can't justify it with my budget yet so once it is over it will be computer feeds for me.
