DiPietro - Top 20?

Hi,

Just to settle a bet, I'm coming too you guys (NYI fan base) on your opinion.

Do you guys think DiPietro is a Top 20 goalie?

Can you name 20 goalies (Starter/Backups) that are better than DiPietro.
You can name both goalies on the team (IE: Thomas, Rask)

Miller
Price
Lehtonen
Niemi
Varlamov
Kipprusoff
Ward
Fleury
Vokoun
Brodeur
Bryzgalov
Quick
Backstrom
Rask
Halak

Easier list, name goalies that Dipietro is better then...Not many. At one point in time, yes he was top 20. Injuries have destroyed his mobility. He let's in some shots that high school goalies stop. I really hope you bet that he wasn't a top 20 goalie.

My buddy said Top 10-15 (he not a NYI fan, he's a Habs fan).
So just to 1-up him, I said he's not even top 20.

I'm 100% sure that every isles fan here will agree with me when I say this. If your friend really thinks that, he needs to put down that crack pipe. How can he be top 10-15 when he isn't even a clear cut starter on the islanders?

He had the worst stats in the league last year.

I will only name 3. Montoya, Nabokov, Poulin.

DiPietro is barely top 60.

I has question - do the Islanders have to pay money to this dude even if he's on IR or does insurance pay for that?

Also if/when he retires do yall get to keep his cap hit for the years remaining on his contract?

In DiPietro's world, he is the only goaltender.

In everyone else's world, he should be top 20 in the AHL.

The only category he would be top 20 in is the ratio of games missed due to injury to games played.

Have you watched hockey in the past 18 months? I would take those three over DiPietro in a heartbeat!

You'll have to forgive the passion of our fanbase.

I assume you know some of DP's background, but if you're asking your question only based on talent then answer to your question is that we don't know.. We've barely seen him over the past few years, and what we have seen in regular season game action hasn't been terribly impressive - until this most recent training camp when some have said he's regained much of his form.

He was very good in pre-season, too.

But again, we have no way of knowing if he's top 20 or not based on talent. But based on production, he's nowhere near it.

I think the Isles pay that.

Contract is insured and there would be no cap hit. If he refuses to retire, the Isles can buy the contract out...but then they'll have a cap hit and owe him money til like 2029 or something. So if/when it comes down to it...retirement would be the only option.

We'll after showing my buddy a few of the responses he's kind of changed his tune by saying "He's top 10-15" talent wise.

My argument would be, and always will be they he had to play consistently for a while to prove it. It's just like Pascal Leclaire. He's made a living of people saying how talented he is, but he never played enough to prove how good he could be...because when he did play it was OK at best.

I pretty much got what I expected...thanks.

He isn't a top 20 goalie now but when he was healthy I would consider him a top 20, possibly top 15.

Seriously?

DiPietro was literally the worst goalie in hockey last year.

he would need a 30 ''win'' season with decent g.a.a /sv. pctg to get himself into the top 20.

Niemi
2010-2011 SHARKS 60 35 18 - 6 6 140 1,741 .920 2.38 3,524

Varlamov
2010-2011 CAPITALS 27 11 9 - 5 2 58 759 .924 2.23 1,560

Lehtonen
2010-2011 STARS 69 34 24 - 11 3 175 2,043 .914 2.55 4,119

Dipietro
2010-2011 ISLANDERS26 8 14 - 4 1 88 773 .886 3.44 1,533

The Year Dipietro posted his best SV %
2006-2007 ISLANDERS62 32 19 - 9 5 156 1,917 .919 2.58 3,627

Are you friggin kidding me? I"m one of the few Dipietro supporters but I'm still realistic. Last year alone those three goalies posted similar if not better numbers then Dipietro did in his best year. Against his numbers last year they are WAY ahead of him. One goalie also has a Stanley Cup ring on his finger.

Dipietro hurts this team with his enormous salary, occupation of a roster spot and limited production. How much better could the Islanders be by using his salary for another player, using his roster spot to develop another player or contribution to team defensive play with another depth player. Ok I'll stop whining about DP now.
