That sucks, Columbus really needed this, principally for the value of "selling" the idea of the 1st overall. Kind of a kick in the balls after a lot of ********(Crybaby Carter)
That being said, as an Oilers fan I was happy to win the lottery, but still pulling for you guys in the long haul.
I'm not even that pissed that we lost the lottery, I'm pissed that it's just another damn thing that didn't go our way. I know we start to sound like pissy babies by saying that, but things really just never work correctly for us in Columbus. Hell even our basketball team pulled a choke job; our football team could go undefeated next season and won't get to play a bowl game. This city is cursed. We finally got a #1 center for Nash, he plays his way out of Columbus and Nash has his worst season in a long while. Pretty much every player on our team slumped the same season, we had constant injuries that never allowed us to see a real defensive core on the ice, Johansen goes to the allstar game and comes back a changed man (not in a good way), we finish with the worst record by a long shot and we aren't rewarded. Damn you Arniel, just keep piling it on.
Leafs fan here, sorry about how the lottery went. I definitely think you guys will be better next year, and how you don't lost Nash or if you trade him its for a good return to help out your future.
I don't think we can even think about trading Nash now. Forsberg isn't Yakupov and he isn't going to be able to soften the blow by trading Nash for a defender, so now I think we either need to keep Nash or trade him for offensive help, but then who in there right mind is going to overwhelm us with an offer involving a forward for Nash? We had much more leverage when we were trading Nash for a defender, now that it looks like we need forwards back, or return that can be expected is much worse you'd have to think.
At least you're not acting disgustingly entitled about it like over half the Oilers' fanbase is.
No, the Oilers fan base in this board is unique (as in mental asylum unique... completely schizophrenic).
I grew up near or around Edmonton during the cup years, the Gretzky trade, all of the ownership issues etc. and have kept some perspective and hope while the team dealt with it all. I have stood by them through thick and thin and will continue to do so.
I know what it is like to watch a team get kicked in the junk by circumstances out of your control...repeatedly and the only thing I can say is use lots of ice and stick with the team. These things have a way of turning around
Man, Words can't describe how bad i feel for you guys. You guys have been through every ******** situation in the world, when you finally have a chance at the first, you guys lose out. I reaally reaaaally hope from the bottom of my heart that everything somehow goes well, like you guys trading nash to montreal for the 3rd overall.
Hope you guys don't give up, trust us, we've been through alot, its going to get better. At least you guys have Johansen to build around, and maybe grigorenko, the 29 other teams would kill for 2 big centres with skill.
With the #2 pick I expect you guys to get a good, core player. The pieces are there for CBJ. Get something for Nash, etc. LA Kings pick is another decent one. That's two guys to get excited about. I liked the JJ trade a lot for you guys in general.
It is hard but there is a peace when the star is traded and you have pure farm system guys. I am not much of a hockey fan. I am a basketball fan who likes the Toronto Raptors and has 20k posts on the HFBoards version of RealGM. I've felt better about the team in the 2 seasons without Chris Bosh than I thought I would. You guys will have a much better restart prospects wise than we did. Our GM thought it was a good idea to let him go to FA and walk for nothing when it was a foregone conclusion for a year and a half that it was over. Our team the year after was like a good team's preseason squad when the 3 best guys are sitting, except that was just the whole team
I don't know if you guys are too competitive with Cleveland and Cinci to cheer for the Cavs, Indians, and Bengals but I happen to love where all 3 of those teams are headed. (edit: forgot the Reds existed, I don't mind their spot either). Browns are what they are.

All of what you said is true.
But on the bright side, I think you guys got a solid return for Carter.
Moreover, although you don't have the first pick, this is a deep draft and you guys do -- all things considered -- have an excellent pick.
Furthermore, Edmonton needs defense more than offence right now; it's very possible to move up or have them pick someone other than Yakupov.
It seems hopeless, but don't worry. As a Leafs fan -- the ONLY team that has yet to make the playoffs since the lockout -- I am the last person to console fans of other teams. I need consolation myself. But that being said, the way the lottery went down was pretty disgusting. You guys deserved the #1 pick. But whatever, c'est la vie. You still have lots of bright things to look forward to.

Jack Johnson
Ryan Johansen
Nikita Nikitin
Cam Atkinson
David Savard
Derick Brassard
All 25 or under. This is a better-than-decent core to build around. You've got a solid top offensive D pairing and a few talented centres to anchor lines with.
James Wisniewski
RJ Umberger
Vinny Prospal
Fedor Tyutin
All talented vets (not that old, but still vet-worthy) that can guide the next gen of blue jackets.
I know today is doom and gloom for you guys, but honestly, it's not too late yet. Make a strong push to fire everyone that's been a part of this cluster**** and develop your core. You'll have a playoff team soon!
Point well taken. But if I can offer a tiny bit of rebuttal to that, there is a lot of truth in the saying, "The bigger they are, the harder they fall." The Gretzky trade alone (or as many Oilers fans call it, "sale") is the kind that can scar a person for life. It happened 25 years ago and I can say with all honesty that it still hurts like hell.
I feel bad for you guys. Many Oiler fans do. Among the fanbases here the CBus fans are one of the more liked ones on HFOil because, partly, misery loves company, but mostly because you have a very small but dedicated fanbase and that gets a lot respect from us --- having a fan protest outside the arena to tell management to get their act together? Trust me, we take notice of things like that and it earns our respect.
Good luck. And for what it's worth (I know, not much), I truly believe you'll be getting a 1st line player at #2 or a top pairing D in Murray if you decide to go that route.

Yes, you do.
OK, we don't get the first pick, I'm disappointed too. So we have to make a smart pick at #2 (no, Matt, it's not necessary to complain about who's making the pick in response to every post), a good trade for Nash (or not), and wise use of the LA #1. We should never have thought that all our eggs were in the Nail basket, assuming he's who they'd have picked, anyway. I'd still prefer new faces at GM and coach, but I'm not confident that's happening. There are still many opportunities to improve this mess of a team and I'm not giving up on it, yet. As someone said above, the lowest point won't come unless the team moves. Next year can be better, even without the top pick, with the right moves and a bit of luck. I'm not optimistic, nor am I wallowing in the pits of dispair, but I remain hopeful. It makes being a Jackets fan just a bit less painful.
With Edmonton adding another #1 overall player or moving that pick for the bounty it will bring they are very likely to move well above 74 points next season. Hard to imagine the Jackets getting close to 70 points in the next 2-3 years, especially with Nash gone. That means we will all be repeating the lottery watch for a couple of years at a minimum. It would be nice to see a new front office in place for the rebuild just to have some slight hope that they might know what they are doing.

Whatever, man.

Thanks, Howson, for cleaning up MacLean's toxic waste. Welcome, Kekalainen; let's get good things built!

Check it out. Silver lining guy. No offense, but none of that sounds like a pretty piss poor way to spend the next two or three years. Don't really agree with your assessment, however.
I see in the chaos, some things starting to come together. I don't know what the Oilers are going to do, but safe to say that adding the kids hasn't done what they expect to this point. I'm not sure adding Nail, or whatever "riches" from trading the pick, will make a significant difference.
I don't expect the playoffs next year. I also don't expect a top six pick either.
I believe this season as been the low point of this franchise and this off season should result in improvements. I see ways in which this franchise can put together a winning team in a short time. I also see Howson impeding that progress. He, like others around here, will shift focus away from the defense thinking that it's the strength of this organization. He's right it is. It's also mid pack it the West.
What am I saying is that it's up to the players to up their game and win despite Howson. I think the players have found a bit of a comfort zone and are starting to understand what the team has to do to win. A player like Atkinson isn't something we see a lot of around here and he's making players around him better. JJ is obviously the defensemen we've never had.
I don't look at Nash possibly leaving as a negative but as a chance for the players to get rid of a crutch and get out from under his shadow.
I am very curious to see what the next 4 months or so brings. I expect the team to be better, but not as improved as it should be. I expect this team to be back in the 80-85 point range.
