Can you positively argue that Booth is better than Samuelsson? Age aside, I don't think its that much of a downgrade in terms of offensive production and might even be an upgrade defensively.
It would be nice to have everyone in agreement that we got the best player. Samuelsson will be here for one season, max. Samuelsson might be a defensive upgrade only bc Booth was so bad defensively.
What you can expect from Samuelsson (unless he's pissed that he just got traded, then he'll be great) is a guy who is just completely convinced that playing the game in a chilled out, relaxed manner is more effective than busting his ass off-- He'll float around, waiting for opportunities to present themselves, and when they do, he usually does a pretty good job of capitalizing.
But if you don't have guys who can constantly give him those opportunities, he might look a little useless. In Vancouver, he's often a guy who deserves to be buried on the 4th or a healthy scratch but also regularly getting prime first unit powerplay time.
Weird guy-- his personality is great.
Now.....
I know his +/- is awful, but how is Booth's play away from the puck? Is he a strong forechecker/backchecker? Good positionally? Strong? Fast? Physical? Tough?
My impression of his offensive game is that he's got physical tools but no puck-skills, but is he a guy who will effectively camp out in front of the net or something?

Samuelssson is like a poor man's Fleischmann. I've always thought both players were rather similar in their styles of play.

His game is not based on "skill". His shot is mediocre, and somewhat accurate. He has great wheels and that is usually what leads to his scoring chances. His defensive game is absent. He won't dangle, and when he tries it never usually works.
However, he usually has a great work ethic, and works hard for his goals. He won't blow you away with some wicked release or great shot, that's just not him. He will give you an honest effort and crash the net type game though.
edit: he's a very north and south player as well. He isn't the creative type.
What people have to understand is, besides Guds, the Panthers that will lead the Cats to Cup Contention are still playing Juniors and in the Minors. What we have on the team now are complementary players and roster fillers.
Interesting fact in that article. The Canucks drafted Shirokov with a pick the Panthers traded to Vancouver in the Luongo trade. Funny that Shirokov is now in Panthers system.

His play away from the puck is below average. Decent forechecker, not a backchecker, not good positionally. Strong, Very Fast, somewhat physical, not tough but not weak.
His offensive game is pretty one dimensional. He has exceptional speed, no passing skills, will not make anyone better around him, and and extremely hard but not accurate shot. He'll give you a good effort but I don't see his production increasing with better players.
Booth Kesler Raymond will be the fastest line in hockey and it wont even be close. Kesler might be able to make up for Booth's defensive shortcomings.
Wow guys..you have no idea how much of a bittersweet moment this is for me. The Panthers have always been my 2nd favorite team since 05, been watching Booth for so long, from his rookie year till just a few days ago. Hearing he got traded hurt me but when I heard it was to Vancouver, I got happy. I'm a Nucks fan at heart though and to have him coming to Van will only give him a better chance at fulfilling his potential. He needed a fresh start and I'm sure he'll impress here.
Samuelsson isn't a guy you should underestimate, when he's healthy he's a great player offensively. He has a great slapshot, top 6 guy and had a 30 goal season in 2009-2010 with the Canucks. We only moved him because CoHo was starting to develop into a better player and, well we got a powerfoward that can play with Kesler.

i agree completely. i really enjoyed booth there for awhile, he gave us something to cheer for, but i dont think hes a great winger. it wouldve been nice to get a player who we could say this guy is going to be a part of the team a few years from now when were hunting for a cup, but whatever, we got two fillers who will be gone once our prospects develop.
but your post did raise an interesting issue, who on the team right now will potentially be on the team when were hunting for a cup? id say flash, versteeg, campbell, kulikov, guds, garrison, markstrom. maybe matthias or ellerby. im sure a lot of people would say weiss. looking at that list it says to me were looking pretty darn good on defense because potentially 4/6 of our defense is on the team already and we have several quality prospects coming up behind them.
I see this a message trade with the added bonus of shedding a longterm contract. With this move, Tallon is telling the team he expects better results than what he's seen so far this season.
I was always a big Booth fan, and will miss his drive & enthusiasm, but he's not been the same player since his concussion. In any event, Samuelsson & Sturm will be on the trading block if this season completely goes south.

Could not agree more with this assessment.
I was a Booth fan as well, and will miss his 'early' years here. He was a bright spot on our dismal roster for a couple of years. I wish him well with the Nucks...except when they play the Panthers.
I'd bet money its a move towards more free agents this summer. http://pucksage.com/?p=712
Booth was 4 million, so are Sturm and Samuelsson, but Booth was still on the books after this summer.
Sturms a good player when healthy, I hated seeing him moved from Boston and I'd rather have him than Pouliot.
