Are the big name players of the NHL taking notice of the budding Superstars?

I was thinking about it and I'm wondering if the big name FA next summer are noticing what is happening with our kids and might take a serious thought about joining the party so to speak. Next years FA D as is stands now

If were going to do this defensively until the kids are ready to take this team to the next level THESE are the players I would be working on for FA or trade and sign. These players would anchor our D corps and let us remain competitive while the kids learn what their capable of. I t would be nice to steal some NW players too lol
A Suter trade and sign would be ideal but note very probable unless Suter saw what the kids are capable of when he got schooled by line 106 the other night.

Good for him. He'll never be in Oiler silks again. Why even bring him up when he has nothing to do with this thread?

I'd be making a pitch to Suter, Kronwall and Carle

I think Kubina and Wideman are the only ones I'd really like to see signed from that list myself. If Potter keeps it up, I'd be happy to have him back too.

We need a top pairing guy and that's it. If we add any lower line D it will just be crowding out our young talent. Plunk someone in at the top and let the rest sort itself out. Wideman, Coburn, Suter, Carle, Beauchemin would all be potential quality #1b or #2 guys, and Gorges is a quality player but might be missing the top end gear. Better to have Gorges than not to sign a D-man. After that its nobody suitable (and in that list there are a few that would only be suitable to shorter terms)

Suter, Whitney, Gilbert, and Smid/Petry would make a beautiful top 4. If we could somehow land a #1 or #1b type defencemen we would be in the running next year.

Souray is from the area too, I wonder if he would take a discount to be close to home. That would be awesome he has had some good seasons in Montreal, very good on the powerplay and would probably be a good veteran presence in the locker room.

My vote would be Suter if we can get him for a reasonable price.

Players are going to definitely take notice as long as our young talent is somewhat consistent. I doubt many big name players want to sign their future away to hopeless basement dwellers. If we show that we're more than that then some of the big fish might come knocking on our door.

I just want more solid 2-way dmen. They absolutely have to be reliable defensively though, if they can chip in offensively then great. Shea Weber would complete this team but acquiring him would be too perfect, it just can't happen.

I can totally see Suter signing with the Wings. They'll need somebody to try to replace Lidstrom.

Most of those guys will sign with their respective teams. Coburn might be the most realistic because of Philly's stacked defense, they're already close to the cap and Erik Gustafsson is an up and coming prospect for them.

That's what I see happening too. Suter and Detroit just seem like an inevitable match for both sides. The Redwings get their Lidstrom replacement, and Suter gets a chance to play for a contender that can spend to the cap and is also closer to home.

And as for the OP, the latest episode of Oil Change had a segment where Tambellini was talking to the scouts/management about the Belanger signing just as it happened and mentioned how he wanted the 3rd year because he saw where the team was going and wanted to be here for that. So it seems like some vets are taking notice already.

Of course, every time I've heard Belanger talk about it, he only ever mentions the security of a 3 year deal and not having to move his kids around each year, so Tambellini could very well have been blowing smoke.

or maybe Belanger's agent was getting the best deal for his client by adding some lip service.
I dont think we need a big name Dman anymore. Smid-Gilbert give us a solid 2nd pairing and Whitney can be solid enough with a Potter or Petry.
We need a replacement for Sutton. Someone just like him but with better mobility.
We also need a replacement for Smyth for our 'checking' line. I dont think Smyth fits that role.

if he keeps his level of play up, the oilers won't be the only team bidding for his services. he could be the oilers next jan hejda if they're not careful and don't get him signed to an extension.

I wouldn't rush into anything. Ok so far but we've all seen these stories before. Let's see what things look like in the new year before commiting to a career AHL player (up to now of course). I highly doubt there will be a bidding war for his services...

i agree, i'm not saying lets throw a 10 year deal at the guy. i just hope that when it is time to think about a new contract (as long as potters play continues at this level) the oilers don't let him walk for nothing, ala hejda, and lose a very good bargin defenseman.

You could be right about it being lip service from Belanger's camp. Even though the Smid/Gilbert pairing is playing well right now, I still think it could use an upgrade.. Smid hasn't shown an ability to sustain this kind of play or to stay healthy. Even if he has turned a corner and his injury troubles are behind him, I still think our top 4 could use the help. Potter has been a pleasant surprise, and I do believe in Petry, but I wouldn't want to risk too much on either of them being a good enough top 4 guy to lean on when it counts.

I think both Smid-Gilbert and Whitney-Petry/Potter can be usefull pairings, but I don't know how comfortable I am with that being our entire top 4. In a perfect world, I think we try to land a high-end/eliete 1st pairing guy (like Suter) to pair up with Gilbert in the heavy minute role, and a vetran top 4 defender (Zanon/Grossman/etc.) to put with Whitney so that he isn't asked to shelter youth/inexperience so much, and roll out Smid-Potter/Petry as the 3rd pairing. That's not going to happen, but I'd like to see one of those moves come to pass before I start to feel good about this defense.
