nice article on salo's 700th game

based on his age, sami should have 1,000 games under his belt by now. but the fact that he kept coming back and has managed to hit 700, with his s*** luck and brittleness, is a huge accomplishment. nice quotes from the boys:

Quote:
Saturday afternoon, while his teammates were congratulating Sami Salo for his game-winning overtime goal against the Minnesota Wild, Alex Burrows was busily retrieving the puck as a souvenir for the Finnish defenceman, prompting the question, why?

Pucks are saved for a player's big moments. His 500th career goal. His 50th goal of the season. His first hat trick. None of these applied to Salo.

So what was the big deal?

As things turned out, it was Salo's 700th career game. But it's what those 700 games represent that tells the story here.

“We love him so much,” said Burrows. “For him to come back this year with all the injuries he suffered and taking a pay cut. And he still wants to win more than anyone. He's a warrior.”

“Sami has so much respect from everybody in this organization,” said Keith Ballard. “It's because of the type of person he is and because of what he's gone through to continue playing. He's just so solid. He's a player I watch every day.”

another key quote from the article: "Salo has been the Canucks' best defenceman by a million miles. The bad news? He shouldn't be but that doesn't diminish for a second what he's brought to the team this season."

i couldn't find a sami salo appreciation thread (how can this be possible?), so i thought to make a new thread. if there is one that the board's search function didn't turn up, can a mod please merge?

Love Sami! You usually just hear about his shot but he's so smart and calm and uses his size and leverage so well.

He's just really good at his job!

Had he stayed healthy his contract would be so much more, but nonetheless, it is what is, and contract is affordable, and I'm so happy he's back!

*Good god our defense last year was one for the ages!!!

When he is healthy and ready to go, he's a premier defenseman in the NHL. Might be a bit much, but that's my opinion from what I've seen when he is on.

I hope he stays healthy for the rest of the season and playoffs. It would be a really nice swan song.

I wonder what his "giving someone an injury by slapshot/getting an injury" is.

That can now be known as the Salo ratio.

Respect for Sami is always nice. Hopefully we can win him that Cup.

That goal also tied him for No. 1 amongst all-time Canuck defenders for GWGs (with Ohlund, I believe). His next assist will also be No. 200 on his career.

My third all time favourite Canuck, behind Ohlund and Burrows. <3 you Sami. No Homo.
